Episode 58: Scene Six
"Life is good, Savannah," Jade signed happily as she leaned back onto her bed. "Today has been like a day straight from paradise."
"I thought it was rather dull, myself," Savannah responded bluntly.
Jade sat straight up on her bed. "What is with you? You refuse to enjoy any good thing that comes your way. Just have fun, for once."
"Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it. This just isn't my thing, Jade. My life is way too confusing right now for me to have fun."
"What do you mean?"
Savannah recalled the frightening event that occurred earlier when she had pulled a knife on the two boys who continued to cause trouble for her. The thought of it sent shivers all throughout her body. "Stuff is just happening that has never happened before," she said simply. "I just want to go back to the Academy."
"Okay, it's been over six months since we got here. Haven't you learned to like anything about it? Wait, let me rephrase that. Have you even tried to like anything about it?"
"Yes, I've tried. Every chance I have I try to like it, but it only gets thrown back in my face. Why can't we just go visit our friends?"
"Savannah, quit your whining. You are going to enjoy this carnival if it's the last thing I do. Now let's go down to the lounge to see if we can't catch some TV. I hear the MTV VMA's* are on tonight." Jade sprang up off the bed and took hold of her friend's hand.
"I don't feel like it tonight. I just want to sit here and rest."
Jade studied Savannah for a few moments. She was frustrated by Savannah's unusually stubborn attitude, but couldn't find the words to drag her out of her slump. "Fine, Savannah. Stay up here. I don't care anymore."
Savannah's eyes become as large as saucers. She didn't believe that Jade would walk out and leave Savannah alone, but she had. Savannah huffed and leaned her back up against the backboard of her bed. She remained there temporarily while she tried to figure out what to do.
Just as she was getting ready to walk out of the room, her phone rang loudly. She clamped her hand on the receiver and picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hello, Savannah."
Savannah waited for the voice to identify him or herself, but no other words came across the line. "May I ask who's speaking?"
"This is Mr. Hughes, Savannah. I'm calling a group meeting tomorrow morning for Word Power to discuss specifics."
Savannah hesitated before asking, "Why are you calling it then? Can't we have it during the evening after the carnival?"
"It's an emergency. We're meeting down at Jax's at about eight-thirty."
"But-"
"See you there," he cut her off.
"Mr. Hughes, I-" Savannah was interrupted by the click of Mr. Hughes putting down his receiver. She sighed and placed the phone back on the hook. Her eyes became thoughtful and serious. "I wonder what he really wants."
