Part Four of Peace, Interrupted

Savannah peered into the window at the front of Jax's. The place was practically deserted, which didn't surprise her much. It was almost eight-thirty in the morning and most people were still asleep or were just barely opening their eyes. She considered it preposterous to hold a meeting so early in the morning, but Mr. Hughes was the sponsor; what he said went as law.

She took a deep breath and walked into the establishment. Jax was nowhere to be found, so she was left to meet Mr. Hughes alone. After hesitating for the slightest second, she continued walking towards him. She relaxed when a smile appeared on his face.

Mr. Hughes stood up and held out his hand to Savannah. "Good morning, Miss Worthington."

Savannah looked down in embarassment as she shook his hand. "Good morning to you, Mr. Hughes," she replied shyly.

"We're all friends here, Savannah. If we are to reach our full potential in our writing, we must open ourselves up to one another. Tell me, how are you enjoying the carnival?"

Savannah took a seat and shrugged pensively. "It seems rather routine," she said, then quickly clamped her mouth shut. She looked up at him apologetically. "I didn't mean it to sound rude or anything."

"What you feel is what you feel. Don't let what other people think worry you."

"I know, I know," Savannah grumbled in agitation. She'd heard the two statements all her life, and was rather sick of constantly being reminded.

Mr. Hughes smiled and patted Savannah's hand, startling her. She looked at him oddly before turning towards the front door.

"When is everyone else supposed to be here?"

Mr. Hughes casually glanced at his watch. "Soon, I suppose. Now, tell me about how you came to be interested in this club."

For several minutes their conversation continued on as such: Mr. Hughes asking the questions and Savannah replying simply if at all. The entire time, Savannah was beginning to loosen up. In the back of her mind, something was tugging at her mind to warn her of something, but she ignored it and let herself finally begin to break free of the restraints that had held her back for so long. For Savannah, the beginning had finally arrived.
