"This cannot be real."

Those four words exemplified all that Karen was feeling at the moment. The thought that she could actually be the next holder of the Miss Midway title was shocking, to say the least. She turned to Chantal helplessly.

"How did this happen? My name wasn't on the ballot!" Karen cried out helplessly.

"Oh, yes it was," Chantal beamed. "You didn't see the ballot, so you didn't know. I made everyone else keep it a secret because I didn't want you to know about it if you lost. However, a lot of people said they would vote for you, so I was sure you'd win. Congratulations, girl!"

"This is...unbelievable," Karen gasped. The crowd had since begun to yell for her to make a speech, but she didn't have the slightest idea of what to say. However, she didn't have much choice when Chantal and Jade pushed her up towards the stage.

She stumbled blindly up to the stage. Mr. Winston shook her head, but all she could do was try to keep from collapsing. After a brief moment of hesitation, she made her way to the microphone. Karen tapped on the head of it. "Testing, 1, 2, 3. Okay, so this thing works."

The crowd laughed and ceased their applause. Everyone waited eagerly to hear what she had to say.

"My gosh. I...would...like to thank God? Okay, I'm really not good at this, but I'll give it a try," Karen drew in a deep breath and smiled her biggest smile. "Wow, this is really amazing. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever become Miss Midway, but here I am! In fact, I used to say that I never even wanted to wear the crown, but now that I look at how shiny and pretty it is I've changed my mind.

"I'd like to thank all of you who went out and voted. I guess I had more friends than I thought, because I never expected to beat out girls like Francesca George and Amber Hart. This is...incredible. It's just so...amazing. I can't stop saying those words, I'm sorry," Karen laughed. "But anyways, I just want to let you know that I'm not going to take my job lightly. I know how involved Miss Midway has to be, and I promise that I'll step it up to a level that you've never even seen before. You elected me, so I'm not going to let you regret it for one second. Here's to an awesome 2001-2002 year!"

Karen held the tiara that Mr. Winston had handed to her high up into the air. The crowd burst into applause again, all of them chanting Karen's name. She bowed politely before making her way off the stage.

As soon as she reached Chantal, she said, "A few minutes ago I would have killed you, but right now I think I'll spare you. I'm going to get out of here. I have another matter to attend to."

"What matter?" Chantal inquired.

"Let's just say there's someone who really needs my help right now. If I'm to be Miss Midway, I can't let people down."
