Episode 60: Scene Four
Becca's hands fumbled with themselves nervously. "Please God, let Christian be happy. Don't let him end up like I did. Please don't put him through what I've been through."
"What did you say?"
At the sound of the voice, Becca closed her eyes and clenched her fists. She hadn't meant for anyone to overhear her silent plea with God. She turned around and smiled thinly at Shannon.
"I was saying that I hope Christian isn't as nervous as I am. This is it, Shannon. Chris is the deciding witness."
"There's no reason to be nervous, hon. Christian will come out of this stronger than ever. I'm sure of it," Shannon said, rubbing Becca's shoulder assuringly.
"You're right. There's absolutely no reason why I should be nervous," Becca said to calm her frazzled nerves. "So where's Chloe?"
"Oh, she's at some tennis camp at Richland University. She told me to give Christian her love and support, though. I can't even stay too long. The one o'clock production starts in about an hour."
"That's right! I forgot that your play was today. Oh, I wish I could come!" Becca squeezed Shannon's hand apologetically. "The second Christian gets out of that courthouse, I'm getting out of here. I can't stand this place!"
Shannon winced at the sound of Becca's anger-tinged voice. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Becca regained her soft voice. "I just don't like this at all."
"Just remain calm. It'll all be over soon. But in the meantime, I brought you some paper from Mrs. Wilkes," Shannon said while pulling out a manilla folder.
Becca took the folder from Shannon and stared at it in confusion. "What could be important enough to warrant all these papers?"
"High school theatre."
Becca nodded and placed the folder in her purse. After glancing at her watch, she said, "I'll look at it in a little bit. Chris should be starting right about now."
