Episode 63: Scene Three
"Are you sure you're ready?"
Eve took a deep breath before clutching her small gym bag and picking it up. She fought back tears as she walked out of the bedroom she'd inhabited for the past three years, never to see it again. "Yeah, I think I am."
Francesca rubbed Eve's back reassuringly. "It'll be okay, hon. It's all for the best."
Eve laughed at the irony. Just a few weeks ago she thought that the worst thing to do would be to leave Midway Prep...and Brent. She turned her face away from Francesca as the thought of her ex-boyfriend stung her deeply. "Maybe."
"It's going to hurt for some time, but it's okay for it to hurt. You don't get over stuff like this in just a couple of days. Give it time."
Eve looked up towards the ceiling hoping that gravity would come to her rescue. The tears were springing to her eyes faster than she could control them. She didn't want to betray all of the hurt she'd been feeling to Francesca, even though she was the closest friend she'd known at MP.
"Whadya say we head down to meet our chaperone, eh? We wouldn't want to keep him waiting too long."
"Okay," Eve bit her lip before glancing back at her room one last time.
When she had gathered her fill of the dull, blank room, Eve walked out of the room and locked the door behind her. She had to fight the urge to run back into the room, lock herself in it and never get out. Eve wasn't one who enjoyed major changes in her life, so this transition was a hard one for her. However, she wasn't alone: Francesca was returning to her home as well.
The many memories that had haunted her during the endless hours of the night were coming back as strong as ever in her departure. The laughter, the tears, the triumphs, and the failures all seemed to play themselves out in front of her. Even her attempt to shield her eyes from them was futile, so she just let her emotions go limp. She dragged her bags along behind her as if she were extremely fatigued.
The car door was open for her when she exited the dorm hall. She paused as she stared in at the dark leather seats. The door seemed to open to a whole new beginning for Eve Lancaster and Francesca George, one that she felt would be a better one than her last one. Eve almost allowed herself to smile at the thought. In fact, she was so absorbed with the thought of her new beginning that she didn't even look back at the tall buildings that were now inhabited by the returning students. For Eve, there would never be any turning back again.
