Iowa's Main Source for Ice Climbing action.

Clayton, Iowa

Clayton has been the heart of Iowa ice climbing for many years, and it has been a rocky relationship with the private landowners of the climbs. Some of this climbs are on public land, but most are on private and the landowners should be approached before you step even one crampon onto the ice. Make sure that you know which are on government land before you climb here, or better yet, just avoid the place and climb up at Pike's Peak taking your tourism dollars to other towns in the area. I am currently not maintaining an active link to the other clayton page (click on a link to CR, Moscow, or IC from the main page to find out why), because it is currently closed to climbing. Besides, Pike's Peak and other public areas have good ice in them nearby. It doesn't look like the issues will be resolved any time soon with the landowner of the main falls in the area. There are other falls in the Clayton area that are on government land or owned by other landowners. If you are interested in climbing those, make sure you gain permission.
