Iowa's Main Source for Ice Climbing action.

Pike's Peak, Iowa

Pike's Peak State Park has several ice climbs that range from an easy WI 1, Mud 1, 200 foot or so gully, to WI 5 overhanging 50 to 60 foot free handing pillars (there are two of these in the park!) There are at least 6 WI 2 to WI 3 climbs that range from 20 to 30 feet. I will pictures when I get around to scanning them. The easiest way to get to these climbs is to park in the main lot, and then rap down the gully that is south of the lot. This will put you above one of the pillars. To reach the rest of the climbs head up river along the railroad tracks and look up the hills. There is enough ice here to spend two full days. Camping is allowed in winter! With Wyalusing across the river, there is a lot of ice on public ground in this area. The second free hanging pillar is south and just at the park's boundaries.
