Sturgeon River Gorge, MI

gorge approach overhead view
While I have not boated this reach, I did once take a 'side-trip' (while in the area boating other rivers) to have a look at the 'gorge' and Sturgeon Falls. Access is not 'roadside', but via a carry-in down a hiking trail. Looking downstream upon first view of the river, one sees fine class I-II rollers entering the gorge (above left). Hiking downstream (atop the bluff shown in the left photo) the view into the gorge is impressive. However, extreme caution is urged if boating this reach. The recommendation is to not put in above this stretch.
Sturgeon Falls
Downstream lies Sturgeon Falls (pictured above left). The river above the falls accelerates toward the brink. It is quite easy to be swept past the point-of-no-return, and over the falls. While I expect there are some boaters who may have an eye toward running this falls, most sane people will do well to enjoy its power and beauty from shore. Thus, the described run on this section of river lists the put-in as being below this falls. My understanding is the river (to the next access point) contains fine scenery and mostly easy class I-II rapids.
