There are a couple of different "West Branch, Sturgeon River" to choose from in Upper Peninsula Michigan. This one lies due north of Iron Mountain, just off Hwy.95 & M569. There is very little to recommend this as a whitewater run. The best drops are shown in the two photos above (two 'lines' on the same falls), and in the photo below. There are some other sweet runnable drops, however far too much of the river (between convenient access points) is flatwater. Additionally, there are areas where deadfalls and braided channels make the river impassible for long stretches. If the idea of taking a boat-assisted (and hindered) hike to explore a relatively small, 'uncharted' river appeals to you, have a 'go' at it. Otherwise, content yourself to look at these photos, and consider yourself better off to be spared the experience. |
