The vast majority of the Tahquamenon River is flatwater. It does, however, contain two falls of impressive beauty. Upper Tahquamenon Falls (above left) drops about 50', mostly onto fairly shallow bedrock. More 'extreme' boaters have run the drop (pretty well to river right), but it is my understanding that park rangers 'frown upon' anyone doing so.
Lower Tahquamenon Falls (above right) lies a ways downstream. A large island splits the river. To the left, the river slips down sloping bedrock and short ledges into a final sticky-looking ledge/hole. To the right of the island (shown above right), it falls off a series of taller ledges, mostly landing quite hard on the bedrock below. A brewpub in the park is open during the (summer) tourist season. |
