Site of a state park, Gooseberry Falls is one of the most scenic sites on the North Shore. As is the case at numerous sites along Hwy.61, while a fee or state park sticker is required for the park, there is also a 'wayside' at this location, allowing parking and hiking around the falls with no charge. An excellent rustic visitor's center exists here, with interpretive displays, a gift shop, and large clean restrooms. (We have taken advantage of this feature, when boating nearby runs, to change into/out-of boating clothes in the warmth.)
Shown above and below are some of the falls in the park. They are referred to by number, starting from First Falls nearest the mouth (the lake), and running upstream to Fifth Falls. A system of trails allows an easy hike to various views of all of them. While I have heard of a mild (class I-II, I believe) whitewater reach upstream, I have never made this run. |
