Kadunce River, MN
Northeast of Duluth, near mile marker 119 on Hwy.61 (northeast of Grand Marais)

A bizarre, 'bobsled run' of a river, the Kadunce is a unique experience for those who choose to do it. After carrying up from Hwy.61, stealing the few random glimpses of the river that the defile allows, a boater excitedly puts in where a footbridge crosses the stream. Runnable levels are just enough to float your boat, as there is often very little room for paddle strokes as you carom down the chasm. Take the shortest creek-boat you can find, and be ready for a near religeous experience as you enter the Cathedral (below left) and float past The Pulpit (below right).

The final drop comes after the river takes a 180-degree bend around a high ridge of rock and jumps off a broken ledge (shown above left) and is immediately diverted sharply right before taming down to a gentle trout-stream for its remaining run to the lake. (You will probably carry back out at this point, since there will barely be enough water to float your boat off the rock-rubble streambed back to the highway.)
