Stewart River, MN
Northeast of Duluth, near mile marker 28 on Hwy.61

Campground Falls Campground Falls
One of the less often run rivers on the North Shore, the Stewart does boast one of the most fun, easy falls for boaters interested in getting a little 'air time', but not ready to step-up to the likes of Illgen Falls (see Baptism River). While the exact name of this falls escapes me, it is something like Campground Falls. The river swings left, then right before dropping off the falls, which seemed to be runnable pretty much anywhere (as shown by the two photos above).

typical hard bend on river Falls on Stewart River
Much of the river is typified by abrupt changes of direction and vertical walls of rock (usually just on one side, the 'outside' of curves) as shown in the photo above left. A few more irregular, broken falls (as shown above right) populate the rest of the run.

Falls on Stewart River DNR dynamited Fish Ladder
While most of the river and its rapids have been left in their natural state (as in the left photo above), the DNR has 'improved' the river for fish (and, hence, fishermen) by dynamiting fish-ladders into one or two of what used to be sweet, sliding drops (shown above right). As a result, while fish can get a few miles further upstream, boaters will need to be cautious. At boatable flows, the resulting stair-step drops can become a series of hazardous keeper-hydraulics with precious little room to portage around conveniently.
