Bad River, WI
Copper Falls State Park, 3 mi. north of Mellen, WI (22 mi. southeast of Ashland, WI)

Copper_Falls Bad_River_Gorge
The Bad River has a number of sections of gradient, but none so spectacular as that within Copper Falls State Park.
Note: While I have heard of 'bandit runs' of the falls, the entire gorge is posted as off limits.
Easy boulderbed rapids lead to short ledges before the main falls (shown above left). After a good pool, the river squeezes between rock walls, and through a long gorge section (above right).

Also in the park, the Tyler Forks River spills across a set of ledges (above left) before jumping down Brownstone Falls (above right) as it drops into the Bad River canyon. I am aware of only one attempt at running this falls, and it resulted in a broken boat and compound fractures of both legs.

Another view of Brownstone Falls (above left), and a view of the Bad River gorge from the brink of that falls (above right) as the Bad River makes a sharp turn, flowing from the background to center-frame, then off to frame-right. Tyler Forks jumps off the lip in the foreground, then flows to center frame for its confluence with the Bad).
