Iron River, WI

1 2
One of many dams being removed from Wisconsin's rivers, the Orienta Dam removal from the Iron River in northern Wisconsin is revealing a potentially interesting area.

3 4
Removal of the most recent large dam at this site has revealed remnants of former dams. Depending on how much of this debris is removed (hopefully all of it!), this site could be mildly interesting to boaters.

5 6
As part of the removal process, there has been built a new short (6-8') dam. Metal spikes have been set into the bedrock at even intervals just out from the base of this dam.

A sweet, sliding falls, dropping into a colisseum of rock would make a very scenic ride on this river. There does not appear to be much gradient upstream, and the river is fairly small at all upstream access points. Downstream from the falls shown here, there is a short stretch which appears quite scenic, but there does not appear to be significant gradient here either. The only real interest would appear to be the falls proper, if the new dam is also removed. (There are rumors and suggestions it may be just for sediment containment during the removal process, and would be removed once the project is complete. We can only hope!)
