Whlie generally less often run by 'serious' whitewater boaters, the Oconto River has a fine stretch of mild rapids. Typically best run in early spring, as soon as the ice is off, scenes such as the above are common, as spray and splash and snow/ice-melt drips create what I like to call 'icicle chandeliers' on overhanging logs and ice-shelves. |
The longest and best drop on the reach is Bagley Rapids, where a county park (with camping) flanks the stream. Generally easy lead-in rapids precede the final set of ledges (shown above left and right). At this point, private residences line the left shore, so scouting (if desired) is best done from river right. |
