A very popular 'beginner river' at low-to-moderate flows (1-2'), this run takes on great intermediate/advanced character at higher levels (3' and up). While quite adequately covered by other sources, I thought I'd throw in a couple (unfortunately poor quality) photos of a couple of the highlights of this reach.
The 'unusual' view in the photo (above left) is looking down from the rocky island at Horseshoe Falls. At low-to-moderate flows, this is a quick easy pour-over followed up by some tricky (for many beginners) 'funny water'. At low flows, while there is some minor play possible, this tends to be a rather uniform, 'steep' pourover, which can be tricky for novice boaters to surf or escape cleanly. At higher levels, a dynamic wrapping wave builds here to challenge better boaters to see if they can find some play. |
Not far downstream, White Dog (above left) is found at a narrowing in the stream. Named for a canine inhabitant of a house (background, right shore in left photo), this spot is generally one of the better surf opportunities on the run. While tending to be somewhat shallow at normal flows, good 'eddy service' either side below allows good play. A 'lunch rock' river left allows non-players to take a stretch.
This reach saves the biggest and best for last. Yellow Bridge (named for an old, yellow, iron bridge, which has since been replaced) begins as the river accelerates under the road and heads to a right-hand bend, where it trips down a wide, irregular sloping ledge. A short pool precedes a sharp left turn, where the river drops off a short, but steeper ledge into a (sometimes significant) hole (shown above right). A good quarter-mile or so of class II-III boulder-garden rapids follows. At anything above low-to-moderate flows, scouting this drop from shore is highly advised for all but the most confident of boaters. Land around this drop is all posted against trespass. Please obtain permission from property owner on river-right before scouting from shore. Generally they have been quite friendly and cooperative when asked in advance. |
