Normally dewatered, a mile long reach of river below the Grandfather Dam contains some amazing action when there is sufficient water to exceed the capacity of the powerhouse. Signs at the dam warn of the dangers of this reach (above left). Immediately out of the dam, water is churned as it encounters a multitude of rock in the riverbed (above right). |
At the very high water levels present when I view this area, numerous crashing, chaotic waves lead down the first half mile of this reach. |
The biggest drop occurred about halfway down the reach, as a large center-river dike of rock created a tongue to the left and a huge hole across much of the river. |
More chaotic waves and occasional sweet looking holes preceded the powerhouse, where the gradient abruptly ends. |
