Gov't
should allot funds to repatriate of OFWs from Iraq
MIGRANTE
Sectoral Party Chairperson Connie Bragas-Regalado today chided the
Macapagal-Arroyo administration for "its stubborn posture of
keeping Filipino workers in the unstable war-torn nation in Iraq."
"After
Filipino security guard and driver Rey Torres was killed outside
his worksite in Camp Victory in downtown Baghdad on April 17, Department
of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo now 'strongly appeals
to OFWs to seek voluntary repatriation.' Isn't this a rather skewed
call for the safety of our compatriots in Iraq?" Bragas-Regalado
queried.
Toress,
who was employed by the Qatar International Trading Company, is
the first Filipino shot and killed in Iraq since the abduction of
Filipino truck driver Angelo de la Cruz in July 2004.
"What
Romulo is not saying is the actual fact that it is the Macapagal-Arroyo
government that has taken pains to deploy both regular and irregular
migrants to war-torn Iraq. He also does not say that the deployment
ban to Iraq after the abduction of Angelo dela Cruz is actually
a farce and the he did not give a damn to those OFWs already killed
or injured by the US war of terror and all other OFWs still in the
war torn nation," Bragas-Regalado said.
We call
on Malacanang to immediately implement measures -- including a massive
repatriation procedure funded by government -- to ensure the safety
of all Filipinos in Iraq and to prepare stable and well-paying jobs
in the Philippines for the more than 6,000 Filipinos who are mostly
working in US companies and military installations that are legitimate
targets of Iraqi rebels, Bragas-Regalado said.
Migrante
also released to the media a partial list of Filipinos caught in
the US war of terror in the Middle East:
