The Tailcone and Empennage

These pictures show the beginnings of the tailcone construction with and without the bulkheads in place.
The picture on the left shows a view of the tailcone bulkheads looking aft. The picture on the right is a view of the aft bulkhead assembly. The horizontal and vertical stabilizers attach to this assembly.
These pictures show the internal structure of the tailcone with the right side skin installed.
This is a view of the forward fuselage-to-tailcone joint. Left is forward. I was asked about this recently, so I thought I'd put up a picture of it.
These pictures show the tailcone skins nearly fully riveted.
These are pictures of the empennage with the horizontal stabilzer spars mounted. The stabilizer has only two ribs, one at the tip and one at the fuselage. The holes in the side of the fuselage are access ports for the tailwheel attaching hardware.
Here you can see a close-up of the horizontal stabilizer attachment. The tab on the top of the rear spar is the upper elevator stop. The fittings (black and white parts) attaching the rear spar to the fuselage are made of 4130 steel.
And here are a couple of views of the horizontal stabilizer with the skins in place. Its amazing how the thing stiffens up when the skins are installed!
On the left is a view of the vertical stabilizer spars and tip rib installed. On the right is the vertical stabilizer root rib-to-forward stabilizer spar joint. This view also shows the forward spar and stabilizer leading edge attach fittings.
Here's a view with the vertical stabilizer skins installed and the drilling nearly complete. Getting this thing straight and with the proper offset was a challenge due to the height. The tib rib is about 7 1/2 feet from the floor with the plane in the holding fixture.
The picture on the left shows the internal structure of the rudder. The tube is a nylon conduit I installed to ease wiring installation for the tail position light. On the right is the assembled rudder attached to the vertical stabilizer.
These pictures show the right-hand elevator structure and assembly with the trim tab installed.
The view on the left is of the elevator control horn installation. The view on the right shows the stabilizers assembled and installed. Not shown is another conduit installed in the vertical stabilizer, again for ease of wire installation.
