An occasional segment on The Good Stuff, if sports stars were funnier, Sports Quote of the Week would be far more weekly in nature. A bit of organisation from Mik could also see this Sports Quote... become a regular segment on the programme, however since Damir Dokic's departure from Australia early in 2001 tracking down a good quote from week to week has become a much tougher prospect.
If you can suggest a good sports quote for Mik and Mal, shoot them an email or drop it off at The Good Stuff Guestbook.
Here's
a small sample of some past quotes of the week:
21/01/2002: "Competitors had to compete in sub-zero temperatures
of around 13 degrees." --Big Darrell Eastlake talking about a surfing
comp in Victoria.
"One hot evening in Egypt, Cleopatra turned to Mark Anthony and said: "There doth stand Colossus." And there stands Phil Taylor at the oché [line]. He's like a leaopard watching a mouse, saying: "shall I eat him with sauce or not?" Peter Manley is a well-built man, but tonight he's had slim-pickings. Taylor is undoubtedly Britain's greatest living sportsman and is up there with the world greats of sport: Don Bradman, Tiger Woods, Ali. I don't think we will see another darts player like him. Who can touch him? He's a genius." --Sid Waddell, Sky TV commentator, calling the English darts championship and maybe exaggerating a bit. For the record, Phil Taylor is the world's no. 2 darts player.
"I always say men's tennis is too tough. It's not like the girls, where they win 6-1 and 6-0 until they're in the quarters. Yesterday, I saw Hingis and, I don't know, a German girl. It was 6-0 6-1. It's like a joke. I think in men's that's not going to happen. Everybody is tough. And you can see [Fernando] Gonzalez, he's [ranked] 160, and he's from Chile and he's in the fourth round, killing everybody, playing as good as he can. Men's is tough. Even if you have a bad ranking, anyone can beat you today." --Macelo Rios of Chile on the state of Women's tennis.
28/01/2002: "Well she had nothing to lose" --Billie Jean King calling a risky winner hit by Jennifer Capriati facing championship point in the Australian open against Martina Hingis.
04/02/2002: "The best thing they can do here is to try their best." -- Tony Greig talking without actually saying anything.
