Period VI continued. I composed a third Signature tune, "101 Angels" - deliberately named to appear first on an alphabetical list. An article on Midis written by me and accompanied by an independant (and favorable) web site review of the Toon Inn in general, and my music specifically, was published in Australian Internet Directory. The number of visitors to the toon inn page doubled overnight. I began to slow down from the manic pace of the early months, due to a return to the workforce and to spending more time polishing difficult tunes, which was a consequence of rising personal standards. 97 Glass Halo (5:30) 49K In terms of subject matter, this song is mined from the same cynical vein as "Plastic Mantra" (2000, page 2). All these holier-than-thou figures in stained windows - but when you look closely, their Halos are made of glass. Musically, this is a slower, more brooding tune than "Plastic Mantra" - it glowers more! Through the SB-Live there's a strange industrial quality to the music that I havn't observed when it was through the Awe-32.
98 101 Angels (14:15) 189K My second signature tune. "Gets a little intense at times" wrote Dan Meyer when he reviewed it. The title comes from the fact that there are 101 different notes in the music when each instrument is counted seperately, and that the tune is so wonderfully melodic. The works hosted at the toon inn were arranged in simple alphabetic sequence, and the title was deliberatly chosen to place this piece right at the top of the list, confident that it was good enough that if people listened to it, they would not only stick around to listen to others, they would come back to look for anything new. And the public did, again and again. The SB-Live Piano has far less dynamic range than the Awe-32 version did, for some strange reason, and the bass is a little thin as a result; also, the drum patterns need a bit of remixing (the handclaps are far too dominant); but for the most part this STILL sounds great.
99 Love Machine (5:58) 115K This was directly inspired by "Rythm Of Love", the Yes hit from "Big Generator", the followup album to 90125. As with most pieces that used a piano-based bass rythm, this just doesn't work quite right on the SB-Live. It was supposed to have a driving beat with slight overtones of an industrial sound (created through a vibratone bass effect). The "third phase" of the Machine (starts a bit after half-way) sounds closer to what was intended , but still not quite right.
100 The Exercise Of Judgement (3:17) 37K
I may be cynical and down on the political process and the political leaders that we elect in consequence but that doesn't mean that I would not vote if given the choice (it's compulsory here in Australia). On the contrary, I believe that you have no right to complain unless you are a willing participant in the political process. At the same time, there is a horrible predicatbility about the process. I live in an electorate that has been a safe seat for the Australian Labour Party for decades. That means that my vote tends to get lost, and at best I can increase or decrease the margin of that party's victory here. I tried to capture all of the above in this one peice of music. It's actually not my most brilliant composition, and should probably rank amongst some of the 1999 efforts - the melody is fairly simple and there isn't much to commend it, musically. But it does sound about right on the SB-Live as well as the Awe-32.
101 Warm Glow (7:41) 149K A piece that never quite captured the hopes that I had for it. Full of nice bits, but it just doesn't quite deliver. Needs remixing on the SB-Live.
102 Surge On (7:50) 167K Another double-meaning title! Surge On = Sir John, geddit? This is a relatively complex work, with mutliple interplaying melodies that always manage to sound pretty good. This was in my list of favortes for a fair while, albeit in the bottom half of the list. But every time I expand the size of the list - something I do every 20 new tunes or so - it sneaks back in. So it at least rates an honorable mention! It won't need much remixing to sound just as good on the SB-Live despite relying heavily on instruments that don't quite work as well - so that's saying something.
103 Here There Be Dragons (6:11) 106K A very complex musical passage, the instruments just don't quite work on the SB-Live. But the potential is still there. This took quite a long time to finish, as I recall - some months - before I bowed to the inevitable and accepted an uptempo chorus - something I have never regretted since. I don't care what sound card you have, this one is worth a listen!
