Plagiarism in the Book of Mormon
detected by my computer

Listed Below are more than a thousand text strings the Book of Mormon has taken from  the King James Version of the Bible. Since I compiled this list I have discovered that Joseph Smith also borrowed from other written works and extensive work has been done on the subject here.

If you are a Mormon there is a rebuttal to my charge of plagiarism
here
American Indians are not related to Jewish people but came from Asia. In Joseph Smith's day it was common to believe that American Indians were the lost tribes of Isreal, an idea now disproved by DNA.

Forward:

First, this page is not intended to be anti-Mormon in any way and I actually like Mormons very much they are great folks. Mormons, in spite of some very strange doctrins, embrace and practice the rightous values taught by Christ. However, I must let the truth about their extra-biblical book be known and I only present the facts that I have uncovered. It is for you to decide what these facts mean to you.

The items below are examples of word for word plagiarism of the King James Version in the Book of Mormon:

Note: Much of Isaiah is quoted in the Book of Mormon and given full credit as being the words of Isaiah. I think it's fair to say many of the biblical quotes could be considered legitimate. However, there is no explanation as to why the quotes match the King James Translation word for word and therefore must be considered plagiarism. Interestingly, even the verse markers and italics are taken from the King James Bible. In short, there are many ways to translate Isaiah into English (even old KJV English) and Joseph Smith did not translate those words but rather copied the King James scholars that did the work hundreds of years earlier.

Also, much of the plagiarism parades itself as being original to the Book of Mormon and no mention is given as having been quoted from the Bible at all. Nowhere in the book of Mormon did Smith give the King James translators any credit for their work. Although many of the strings found by the computer could be plausible coincidences, in whole the shear number of exact KJV phrases leaves no doubt the Joseph Smith plagiarized the King James in a wholesale manner.

Note: In the first example below it is very curious that Smith would use the Greek “Alpha and Omega” when he was purported to have translated a form of Egyptian. Alpha and Omega in Revelations is translated literally from the Greek alphabet for “A and Z” implying “First and Last.” Although it makes sense for the King James translators to translate Greek into “Alpha and Omega” there is absolutely no reason to translate any form of Egyptian this way. It should also be noted that the use of “Alpha and Omega” is unique to Revelation and not used anywhere else in the Bible.

Revelation 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end,..” vs. 3 Nephi 9:18 “… I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.”

John 1:27 vs. 1 Nephi 10:8 whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.”

Luke 13:30 vs. 1 Nephi 13:42 “and the last shall be first, and the first shall be last.”

Genesis 3:22 vs. Alma 42:3 “and lest he should put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat and live forever,”

Acts 19:31 vs. Alma 52:10 sent unto him, desiring him that he would..”

Isaiah 53:12 vs. Mosiah 14:12 “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

1 Kings 2:3 “…to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses,..” vs. Helaman 15:5 “…to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments according to the law of Moses. “

Note: Isaiah 52:10 is plagiarized word for word three times in the Book of Mormon. Isaiah 52:10 vs. Mosiah 12:24, Mosiah 15:31 and 3 Nephi 20:35 “The Father hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see…”

Luke 8:10 “Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God…” vs. Alma 26:22 “..unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God…”

Matthew 10:15 “Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.” vs. Alma 9:15 “Nevertheless I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for them in the day of judgment than for you, if ye remain in your sins…”

Judges 8:34 “…who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies…” vs. Alma 45:1, Alma 62:50 and Mormon 3:13 “…delivered them out of the hands of their enemies…”

2 Kings 15:34 “And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD: he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done.” vs. Helaman 3:20 “and he did do that which was right in the sight of God continually; and he did walk after the ways of his father..”

Deuteronomy 20:9 “…the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people …” vs. Alma 6:1 “…Alma had made an end of speaking unto the people…”

Matthew 18:18 “…Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” vs. Helaman 10:7 “…that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven;…”

Matthew 21:21 “if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” Helaman 10:9 “And if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou cast down and become smooth, it shall be done.”

1 Corinthians 12:9 “To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;” vs. Moroni 10:11 “And to another, exceedingly great faith; and to another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;”

Note of interest: Mark 16:17-18 (below) does not appear in the earliest biblical manuscripts and many scholars believe those words were inserted at the end of that chapter during the middle ages. Smith copied the words likely not knowing the questionable nature of those verses.

Mark 16:17 & 18 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” vs. Mormon 9:24 “And these signs shall follow them that believe -- in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover;”

1 Corinthians 13:6-7 “Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” vs. Moroni 7:45 “…rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. “

To be continued….

Below is a list of eight word strings found in the Book of Mormon that are exact matches to stings found in the King James Version Bible. If I searched strings of only five the list would have been many time longer and I likely have missed many instances in my search. Nevertheless, you will find this list to be very comprehensive and every string will be identical in both the Book of Mormon and the King James when you do an exact search.

I have not looked up even a fraction of the hits so feel free to compare if you feel up to the task. Strings are repeated for each instance they occur in the Book of Mormon, so if the Book of Mormon duplicates a KJV string three times it will be listed three times. Many of these hits may be explainable so they need to be viewed in context and compared to determine if intentional plagiarism occurred. However, I can easily conclude that with more than a thousand strings of eight there is more than just coincidences going on here.

Also, I found this website to useful regarding issues involving the Book of Mormon http://www.concernedchristians.org/reason/bom/insufficient.html
