1964 - - Rev. Douglas Brown Dies at Cayuga

Rev. L. Douglas Brown, pastor of St. Stephen’s Parish, Cayuga, died in his 56th year, on Friday, May 29 at St. Stephen’s Rectory following a lengthy illness.  He was the son of the late Rev. W. J. H. Brown, former pastor of Annette St. Baptist Church, Toronto, and Charlton Baptist Church, Hamilton.His body lay in state in St. Stephen’s Church until requiem high Mass was celebrated May 30 by Msgr. J. A. O’Reilly of Dunnville, Bishop T. J. McCarthy gave the absolution.  The choir was under the direction of Rev. Francis Thompson of St. Catherines.
The remains rested at St. Stephen’s Rectory, where more than 450 people paid their last respects, including Girl Guide leaders and the Cayuga Boy Scouts who came in a body.  On June 1 a Pontifical Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Bishop McCarthy, at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, in St. Catherines.
Internment took place in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hamilton.  Pallbearers were Joseph Pree, Patrick Long, Joseph Hinz, J. F. Baird, Carl Chambers, William McSorley and Dan MacEachern.
During Father Brown’s pastorate in Cayuga, St. Stephen’s School was built, and later two rooms were added.
Under Father Brown’s supervision, the church grounds were graded and landscaped, an addition was built to the sacristy, the interior of the church was entirely renovated and a Hallman organ was installed.
Father Brown was widely known not only for his acts of kindness but for his interest in community affairs and in the welfare of young people.  He established a free dental clinic for the children of the community and donated the lot on which the Cayuga Scout Hall was built.
Father Brown was the brother of Rev. William Gordon Brown, Dean of Central Baptist Seminary, Toronto, and pastor of Runnymede Ave. Baptist Church, Toronto.  He was at one time a minister and later became a convert to the Catholic faith.
Father Brown was ordained on December 17, 1949 in St. James’ Catholic Cathedral by the late Archbishop Paul-Emile Charbonneau of Montreal, for the diocese of Richmond Virginia, U.S.A..  Father Brown returned to the Hamilton Diocese in 1956 and was appointed to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Cayuga, which is now in the Diocese of St. Catherine’s.  R.I.P.
