Notes for MARGARET BENNETT THOMSON:
Margaret should have had University education but there wasn't the money.
Girls could not earn as easily as men in those days. So she went to Sprott Shaw
and passed 2nd in BC in her Civil service exam. She worked as a secretary with
Henry Bell Irving's business, a forerunner of the H.R. Mac empire!
Then her dream of going to Clifton Springs came true after her dad insisted she leave VGH where she had started training. So there at Clifton she did well, graduating with highest marks.
After the death of her husband, she worked at St Joseph's hospital. She took a medical records librarians course, setup a Medical Records branch at St Josephs, in Nanaimo, and in Salmon Arm. One year she was the president of the Medical Records Librarians Association of BC.
As a child she loved music and her happiest childhood memories were her piano lessons from the wife of one of the teachers at Chefoo. She dreamt then that when she grew up and wore a dress with lace cuffs that fell onto the back of her hand like Mrs Taylors - she'd be a lady.
She kept up her piano and was an excellent accompanist which is an art of its own. She later also played the church organs and did so at the wedding of a friend of her sister Agnes.
Margaret also did beautiful embroidery and fine sewing. Before becoming a Medical Librarian, she had a shop with Dance supplies in Victoria called "Peggy's" - she made some beautiful fine lingerie - all hand work for sale. There was a period when she did China painting too (her daughter Patricia has some of it).
She had many gifts. Unfortunately, she never had the strength to do all she was capable of doing.
[above info supplied by her sister Agnes in February 1995].
She was a registered nurse, and a homemaker.
She loved all things bright and beautiful.
