Death of a Dereham Pioneer

The death occurred at Brownsville on Tuesday morning of John Addyman Brown, a lifelong resident of Dereham, and one of its most highly respected farmers, in his 61st year.   Deceased had been in poor health for some time past from heart trouble but was not considered in any immediate danger.   On Monday night he retired as usual but during the night he was seized with an alarming attack, and despite all that could be done he never rallied and passed away in the early hours of the morning.

Deceased was a son of Rev. Brinton Payne Brown, one of the pioneers of Canada, who moved from Talbotville, five miles west of St. Thomas, to Dereham, in 1841, locating near the present site of Brownsville, where the subject of this sketch was born on the 7th of June, 1843, and where he resided unitl his death.

He was always an advocate of temperance and moral reform, and for nearly 25 years has been identified with the Baptist church in the village, being one of the few who, in the year 1880, banded together and formed the nucleus of the present organization.

He was the youngest of a family of twelve children, of whom the four eldest and three youngest have been taken away.   On the 27th of April, 1867, he was married to Miss Annie Cuthbertson, only daughter of Mr. Nicholas Cuthbertson, sr., of Tillsonburg, who survives him.   He also leaves three children to mourn his loss, viz: - Mrs. W. A. Elliot  and Calvin B. Brown, Brownsville, and Dr. G. Byron Brown, Yonkers, N. Y..

The funeral takes place this afternoon to Delmer cemetery.
