Chapter Three
JC removed the disk from the disk drive, happy with the results of the testing. He was putting the disk into his pocket when he heard, "You sneaky, lying son of a bitch." He turned around to see Justin scowling at him. "Let Britney do the testing, huh?" Justin continued. "I just knew you were gonna sneak and here and do it yourself, so you could take all the accolades for this project. Well, I won't let you, you know."
JC smirked and answered, "Well, it's too late. I'm already done." He leaned back and watched Justin turn red with anger.
"Bitch." Justin yelled as he stormed out of the room.
JC laughed as Justin left. He shut down his workstation and was putting on his jacket when Lance came in the room.
"Hey, babe. What are you doing here?" JC asked, surprised.
"I decided to come pick my baby up, take him out for some lunch." Lance answered, leaning against the door.
JC smiled as he turned to put his jacket on. "Oh, you're so sw…" His voice trailed off as he turned around and saw Lance.
With a gun.
"Give me the disk." Lance demanded coldly, the gun trained on JC.
JC looked at his lover in disbelief. "What's going on?" he asked, eyes never wavering from the gun pointed at him. "Why are you doing this?"
Lance rolled his eyes, exasperated. "I'm doing this because my bosses want the program."
"Your bosses? But I thought you were an accountant!" JC yelled, panic starting to overtake him.
Lance laughed hollowly. "I work for a governmental agency, but not your government. These past few months I was planted in your life to get information about the Gatekeeper program. Once you give me the disk, my job will be done. And so will your life." He cocked back the hammer on the gun and added, "If it makes you feel any better, you really were the best lay I've ever had."
JC stood there, staring at his lover speechless. Just at that moment, the heavy steel door swung open, and a red-faced Justin came in, still cursing at JC.
JC had never been so glad to see anyone in all of his life.
Lance, distracted by the interruption, swung around to see who had come in. JC took that moment to tackle Lance to his feet, knocking the gun out of his hand, and hit him with the hole puncher that was on his desk. Justin, confused but knowing something bad was happening, picked up the discarded gun and hit Lance across the head with it, knocking him out completely.
"Let's get out of here." JC offered, grabbing Justin's arm and pulling him out of the building.
"What the hell was that?" Justin asked JC as he was pulled to JC's jeep in the parking lot.
"Well, up until he pulled a gun on me, he was my boyfriend." JC answered. Justin looked at him, surprised and then burst out laughing.
"Damn, you're that bad?" Justin asked, clutching at his sides as he laughed. "You may bitch about my failed relationships, but no one's ever pulled a gun out on me!"
JC narrowed his eyes as he pulled out of the parking lot. "You ass, he pulled a gun on me because he wanted the program. He's from some foreign government agency. And if he wanted to kill me, what are the odds that they want to kill you too? I mean, we were working on it together."
Justin blanched as JC's words sunk in. "So, what are we going to do?" he asked, his eyes wide and scared.
JC shrugged. "I don't know," he answered helplessly. "But I do know that we need to lay down low before we figure out what it is that needs to be done. Which way to your apartment? You're going to need some clothes."
Justin and JC had crept up the stairs to Justin's apartment, making sure to not be seen. To Justin's surprise, when they looked out into the hall, Wade was in from of his apartment, on the phone.
"You lost them?" Wade was saying, practically screeching into the phone. "No, no, I'm on top of it. In fact, I'm in front of his apartment now….yeah, yeah…"
"New boyfriend?" JC asked when Justin slumped against the wall. Justin nodded. "Well, I'm taking comfort in the fact that I wasn't the only person sleeping with the enemy."
Justin glared at JC before returning his attention to the man at his door. "Well, if they've got someone at my apartment, they've probably got someone at yours, so that idea is out. You got a laptop on you?" JC nodded. "Good. We need to go to the bank and withdraw all the money we have, if they haven't gotten to it already. I have a friend in Texas, he's kind of eccentric, but he'll know where to go with this."
JC nodded again. "You know," he said, as the started up the car, "this morning I was in love and you were my biggest enemy. Now I find out that my boyfriend is some spy out to kill me, and you're my only ally. Crazy isn't it?"
Justin leaned back in his seat and replied, "What a difference a day makes."
