City High, who are from New Jersey, consist of three members, Claudette Ortiz, Robby Pardlo and singer/rapper Ryan Toby (who starred in Sister Act 2). This trio were the first act to be signed to Jerry Duplessis and Wyclef Jean's Booga Basement label. The one woman/two man line-up and their cool fusion of contemporary hip-hop and R&B styles inevitably drew comparisons to the Fugees. The Willigboro, New Jersey-based crew was originally formed by established producer/songwriters Robby Pardlo and Ryan Toby, with singer Claudette Ortiz brought on board at the suggestion of Duplessis and Jean. The trio enjoyed national success with the gripping morality tale "What Would You Do?", which had originally gained widespread exposure on the Life soundtrack. By spring 2001, the track had broken into the US Top 30. Their excellent self-titled debut was released shortly afterwards. Sound Files (MP3) What Would You Do? - from the album City High |
