Snoop Dogg (b.Calvin Broadus, 20 October 1972, Los Angeles, CA, USA) acquired his nickname from the cartoon dog Snoopy. He burst onto the scene in 1992 (then known as Snoop Doggy Dogg) when he made appearances on the Deep Cover soundtrack and Dr.Dre's The Chronic, including the super smash hit "Nuthin' But A G Thang". That was also the year when he was signed to Death Row Records.
Then the next year Snoop released his debut album Doggystyle which debuted at No.1 on the US Billboard Charts, making history becoming the first ever debut artist to have a debut album debut into the charts at No.1. The lead single "Who Am I (What's My Name)" from that album also became an overnight success, becoming an international smash hit.
Not only did popularity increase for Snoop Dogg but so did controversy. In August 1993 Snoop Dogg was involved in a drive-by fatal shooting, where he was identified as the driver. But luckily in February 1996 he was acquitted of the charges.
And then in November 1996, his second album Tha Doggfather, was released. A difficult year that was for Snoop, as Dr.Dre left Death Row to form his own label, Aftermath Records, and also the tragic death of 2Pac. Many people thought that when Dre left Death Row, Snoop's career was in jeopardy, because he was best known collaborating with Dre, probably due to the reason why his second album didn't do as well as his first.
So in 1998 Snoop made a turning point in his career, not only changing his name from Snoop Doggy Dogg to Snoop Dogg, but also changing his record label too, leaving Death Row to sign with No Limit Records, and released his third album Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told, which featured "Still A G Thang".
And then in May 1999 Snoop released No Limit Top Dogg, which featured a stack of guest artists, for the likes of Mystikal, Silkk The Shocker, Master P, Dr.Dre, Xzibit, and Mausberg (R.I.P.).
In early 2000 Snoop decided to further his career by forming his own label, Doggystyle Records (originally named it Dogghouse Records but was forced to change the name since somebody else already had rights to the name Dogghouse), and also brought former gang rivals Tray Deee and Goldie Loc together, to form Tha Eastsidaz, and to make an album titled Snoop Dogg Presents Tha Eastsidaz, which featured the street hits "G'd Up" and "Got Beef".
And then in later 2000 Snoop Dogg presented another project, this time three female MCs, known as Doggy's Angels, and produced their album Pleezbaleevit, which did fairly well, and featured the commercial hit single "Baby If You're Ready".
A busy year 2000 it was for Snoop Dogg, as he had also released his fifth album Tha Last Meal in December that year. Selling approximately 400,000 copies in its first week, the album became a huge success. That would had to have been his best album since Doggystyle.
In 2001 Snoop Dogg got into the acting scene, starring in the films Baby Boy (alongside with singer/model Tyrese), The Wash (also with Dr.Dre) and Bones (as the lead role).
Then in 2002 Snoop Dogg went his separate ways with No Limit, signing with Priority Records and releasing Paid Tha Cost To Be Tha Boss, which featured a stack of guest artists such as Jay-Z, Ludacris, Redman, and many more. Two years later he signed with Pharrell's Star Trak Records and released R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece. Tha Blue Carpet Treatment followed in 2006, and then Ego Trippin' in 2008.
