"The countryside is there"

"Wales/UK" - by The Welsh Wizard
(Wales, UK)

22nd March, 2001

The Country side is there,
The Country side is bare.
Not a Tourist to be seen,
Where Foot and Mouth has been.

Unfortunately we are in a bit of a state, the state of Wales, sorry, but we are in a bit of trouble. The tourist is buggered if they do come and buggered if they don't.

One side, the Politician, says "Yes come and see the towns and Cities of Wales".
The NFU and the farming communities say "No stay away, it will help to spread the disease". Hence my original statement.
We have 24 cases in Wales, to date.

On a more brighter note, Wales stuffed the frogs last Saturday, in France. It was a brilliant match and the Boys really looked like they meant it. After the Rob Howly try, that is, prior to that I thought it was a repeat of previous matches.
Well done the boys.

We have the "King and I" being performed at the Girls School, in Monmouth. By all reports it is a great show. Bet the boy who is playing the King is having a whale of a time, he's from the Boys School. Ha.Ha.

Sick as a parrot Antiques dealer From Monmouth.
An old film bought in a Monmouth Antique shop for the princely sum of £15 was later sold on to a Hollywood film director for £350.000. The film was about the "Angel of Mons"
The Angel of Mons was said to have been seen over the trenches in the First World war, when it appeared to hold back the German troops as they prepared to attack the British at Mons in Belgium. The sighting was reported by many of the soldiers.

Remember Rationing.
In 1941 the rations per person per week was as follows:-

Bacon & Ham -4oz(125g) Suger - 8oz (250g)
Butter - 2oz(60g) Cooking Fat - 8oz (250g)
Meat - by Price(5p) Tea - 2oz(60g)
Cheese - 1oz(25g) Jam - 2oz(60g)

That's what I call being good for the figure, no wonder I'm slim!!!.

Well it has raised it's ugly head again. Is Monmouthshire Welsh or English??.
It would appear that when we commenced the 2W.W. the British Government signed the declaration naming all the Countries making up the UK, plus Monmouthshire. When they signed the cessation of hostilities Monmouthshire wasn't mentioned.
Does this put us still at war with Germany??.

The argument now is all about when we became part of England, then part of Wales and so on and so on. Apparently the debate is governed by which side the arguer is on.
In 1974 was the last time this argument was brought up politically and thought solved, Monmouthshire is Welsh. But those opposed to this find holes various in the legality of this move. All I know is, the Welsh Assembly is very glad Monmouthshire is Welsh, we can pay for the overspending of the Councils down in the Valleys.

If you have got this far, well done.

I hope to meet you in our wonderful Principality on holiday sometime.

If you require a roof over your head whilst visiting, don't forget to follow the links to a Monmouth Holiday Let.
