"The election and Europe"

"Wales/UK" - by The Welsh Wizard
(Wales, UK)

28th May, 2001

Well here we are with about 12 days to go before the General Election.
What have we learnt so far.
LABOUR - We will be getting more stealth taxes.
They will be putting more money into Education/National Health service, as they didn't do before!!!.
We will be going into Europe, whether we like it or not. Regardless of the Referendum.

We are one of, if not THE, highest Taxed Countries in the world. What returns do we get for these Taxes.
Third world NHS, Education system that neither the teachers nor students can understand, Third world literacy, not helped by my spelling either.
A train service that is the envy of the world.
No one understands how we can run a system like ours and call it a Railway System. Most Systems have a Time Table, Trains cleaned most, if not, every evening.
Bosses that take a Bonus even if their Company has loses of Millions.

CONSERVATIVES - We will not be joining Europe, in the foreseeable future. We will be keeping the £ (Pound).

They will cut Taxes, give more money to the NHS/Education. In short the opposite to everything on the Labour list.

Sounds like the rolls are reversed from all those elections that have gone before.

LIBERALS - Everything Labour says, but own upto to raising taxes, to give more money to NHS/Education.

Everyone is worried sick about whether we join the Europeans or not.
It will bankrupt the country if we don't join.
it will be dictatorship, by an unelected Government, if we do.

The second point is probably right. The first point couldn't be further from the truth.

Norway/Sweden or not members, they do more trade with Europe than we do.
About 10% of business in this Country goes to Europe, if not less. Whilst our imports from Europe, % wise, is very high. So they would miss us more than we would miss them.
For some reason, which I do not understand, the European bosses seem to think that the European Community would sink if we did not join. It is going to do that anyway.

The public in most, if not all, European Countries do not want to become a Great Nation State, they wish to keep their individuality and coinage.
This is a power thing for, so called, Politicians.

That's it this time, I will return hopefully, with a smile or a grimace, after the General Election.

May your God go with and may you be in heaven half and hour before the devil know your dead.
