October 5
We found a cloudy, drizzly day when we awoke. As was the case with the day before, we woke up later in the morning because of our colds. However, because we weren’t in a hurry to check out, we stayed asleep even longer. We didn’t stagger out of bed until 10 a.m. It was another hour before we ate brunch. Kelly was at work, so Denise offered to take us wherever we wanted to go. However, we just wanted to rest our colds (which were a bit better). So, we told Denise that we were happy staying at home today.
About 2 p.m., Denise went off to pick up Julia from pre-school. We were feeling well enough that we decided to walk down to the Kathe Wohlfahrt store on base to pick up some last minute gifts. As I mentioned earlier, we had visited the Kathe Wohlfahrt store in Heidelberg early in our trip. While we were stunned by the variety and quality of the Christmas ornaments in the store, Kelly had told us not to buy too much at the Heidelberg store, because there was a Kathe Wohlfahrt on base where we could get the same items, and not have to carry them around Germany on our travels. It turned out he gave us some great advice. We bought a lot of ornaments (and even a cuckoo clock), and only had to carry them as far as Kelly and Denise’s apartment.
Kelly arrived home at about 6 p.m. He thought that a great way to spend our last night in Germany would be to have Indian food, just as we did when we visited them when they lived in England. The preferred Indian restaurant in the area was called the Bombay, which was in the town of Kaiserslautern – Einsiedlerhof. Kelly and I drove over there, placed an order, and drove it back to their apartment. The food was just as good as those in the tandoori restaurants of London. Particularly good were the curry and tikka dishes. Dianne couldn’t stop raving (and still can’t stop raving) about the fruit filled naan. Each of the dishes cost about €12, but they were worth it. I can see why the Bombay is so popular…it’s deserving of the good reputation it has.
We spent the rest of the evening watching TV and packing our suitcases for the trip to London.
