In a sermon at Parkside in October 1916, William A. Potts spoke strongly for conscription.

"This question YES or NO is really one of loyalty or disloyalty, courage or cowardice, sacrifice or selfishness."

His Quarterly Meeting, along with others that month, passed a resolution urging Methodists to vote YES. the Standing committee (or executive) of the Conference, with a membership of 106 (50 of them laymen), took the same action.note1

The first national referendum for the introduction of conscription was narrowly defeated on 28 October 1916, three of his sons served as volunteers in the war.

The brother of W.A.Potts, Reverend George Potts, had two sons who served in the war.
