My grandfather, Arnold Ernest Sando, and four of his brothers saw active service with the AIF in World War 1

Their grandfather, Anthony Sando, had emigrated from England 67 years previously when the colony of South Australia was just 11 years old. There was a strong sense of duty to enlist but there must also been a sense of adventure, it was an opportunity for young men to travel around the world to South Africa, Egypt, England and France. The adventure came to an end in the trenches of France, two brothers died and my Grandfather was injured. They are remembered in bronze and granite memorials, and also in the history of a South Australian family.
