" Welcome to the Gateway to the Western Lake district, Millom and the surrounding district." Millom is a small coastal town situated on the southerly peninsula of Copeland and forms part of the South Western Lake District in Cumbria.

It is bounded to the west by the Irish Sea. The Lake District National Park and coastal fell environment that surround the town is picturesque being located adjacent to the Duddon Estuary , which has international recognition for its significance as a wildlife habitat e.g. RSPB Reserve at Hodbarrow.

Millom acts as the service centre for the villages of Haverigg , Silecroft , Bootle , The Green , The Hill , Waberthwaite , Ulpha and a scattered rural population including The Duddon Valley - Wordsworths favourite place in the Lake District!.

Millom's most famous son is poet and author Norman Nicholson (1914 - 87) , who lived his whole life at St. George's Terrace in the town centre. It is now a local Cafe "Nicholson House". A new stained glass window memorial has been placed in St. George's Church , where he worshipped.

Millom Castle on the outskirts of the town is not open to the public. Nearby is Swinside Stone Circle The Folk Museum , housed in the old Railway Station buildings, has a full size drift mine exhibit. The RAF Museum Millom is based in Haverigg in the old Airfield buildings. It has extensive exhibits which can take a day to get around.
