Physical Description -- Blessed with broad-shoulders, Cosmas stands tall and would be considereded attractive by most girls. That is, if they took notice. While he should be the apple of some young girl's eye, Cosmas does little to accentuate his looks. He is usually wrapped from head to toe in heavy black robes, which conform to school rules but look thicker and more formal (in other words, kind of uncool). Usually, his eyes lie hidden behind locks of tangled black hair. While dark, they shine with an intense inquisitiveness and, at times, looks as deep as oceans. His hands are quite large, but they can handle the most delicate of tasks and turn the brittle pages of ancient, dust-covered tomes. His cheeks seem a little hollow below pronounced cheek bones, but they dimple when his face lights up in a smile.
Personality -- Cosmas is a very serious student. Like his father, he regards academia as something sacred, and is not terribly impressed by outlandish, desperate behaviour. He tends to spend far more time with his nose buried in a book than flirting with girls and laughing with friends. He is not the Quidditch star, nor is he the joker. But he is hardly unpopular. There is a rather dark and secretive air to him, heightened by his periods of grave severity and the rolling 'R's of his foreign accent. He has enough of his mother in him to know how to have a good time. He can be extremely affible, confident and assertive when need be, and is, generally, good company to his friends in Ravenclaw House. And he has even been known to break a few rules, despite being a prefect.
History -- Cosmas Strachonice was born and raised in Trebon in the Czech Republic. It is a town with a long association with Alchemy. From and early age, Cosmas had an unusual association with the study, given that his father was one of the few remaining 'traditional' Alchemists.
Although he was a minor noble, Cosmas's father shunned the court. He had grown sick of high-flying colleagues who were more interested in following in the footsteps of the famous Dr. John Dee and his school of magic consultancy and courtly favour. Cosmas's father preferred to spend days on end hunched over archaic tools, weighing materials and taking measurements in a small, cramped chamber. Sadly, Cosmas's father was more familiar with his tools and materials than he ever was with his son. This left much of Cosmas's upbringing to his mother.
Unlike her husband, Cosmas's muggle-born mother took society seriously. An actress before she was married, Cosmas's mother found that her newly acquired nobility only increased her celebrity. She wanted her son to move in the proper circles, and to associate with the right people. This involved magical people as well as muggles. The blood-line was not what was important - it was where you stood in society.
When he was young, Cosmas found his father's secret studies fascinating, and his mother's aristocratic-yet-debauch parties exciting. But as he grew, he became increasingly disillusioned with boths worlds. His father's utter disdain for society seemed well founded, as did his mother's frustration with her 'selfish' husband.
His parents had been in agreement over one thing: Cosmas MUST attend Hogwarts. Cosmas's father valued the school's stance on tradition, while his wife thought that an education abroad - and at such a prestigious school - would certainly benefit her son. Especially since it would mean that he would have direct access to Albus Dumbledore, the greatest Wizard of the age, and to Harry Potter, the Boy who Lived!
