Serena stretched and yawned, a smile across her face. She was happy, truly happy,
for the first time since the accident. She finally felt at peace with everything
that had happened.
"It might just be a good Christmas after all." She said as she pulled herself out
of bed. After her ritualistic shower, Serena dressed in a short white dress and
clipped her hair back with pearl clips. She half danced down the stairs and into
the kitchen.
"Morning!" She called in a sing song voice.
"Well your certainly in a good mood. What did you two do last night?" Jed asked.
"Not much." Serena began humming to herself. She opened the cupboard and took out
a glass before dancing to the fridge. She poured herself a glass of orange juice
and sipped it.
"I have to run to the mall to pick up a few last minute things. Anyone want to
come?" Darien asked.
"Mmm.. I have to grab a few things." Serena told him.
"All right." Darien smiled. Serena finished her orange juice and set the
cup in the sink.
"I'll just be a sec." She told him before going into the study. She picked up
the phone and dialed a number.
"Hello?" A voice asked.
"Lita?"
"Serena! What's up?" Lita asked, happy that her friend had called.
"A few things actually. One, yesterday I remembered a bunch of things when I was
shopping for you guys. The little things, you know? Like your favourite colours
or what books you wanted and stuff." Serena told her.
"That's great Sere!" Lita exclaimed.
"Also, I need your help. What can I get Darien?" Serena asked.
"Oh.. I don't know Sere... Cologne maybe?" Lita suggested.
"Yeah, I'll just look around. I'll call you later tonight about tomorrow, okay?"
Serena asked.
"Sure thing. Talk to you then."
"Bye Lita." Serena hung up the phone and went to the front foyer. Darien was waiting
for her, so Serena ran up stairs to get her shoes. She slipped on a pair of knee
high white boots to match her dress. Serena skipped down the stairs and grabbed her
jacket from the front hall closet.
"Ready!"
"All right. I already brought the car around already." Darien told her and the two
went outside and climbed in. "Aren't you cold?"
"Nope, why?" Serena asked.
"Your dress is so short! I thought you would be cold." Darien leaned over and turned up
the heat.
"I'm fine." Serena reassured him.
They pulled up to the mall and got out. Darien locked the car and set the alarm
before they went inside.
"I need to pick up something. I'll meet you back here in an hour?" Darien asked.
"Sure thing." Serena smiled and headed off into the crowd. She went into a department
store and began searching through the men's cologne.
"May I help you miss?" A voice asked. Serena turned to see a pretty salesclerk smiling
at her.
"Yes, please. I'm searching for something.. For a friend." Serena bit her lip and
glanced at the cologne. "I'm completely clueless."
"A friend, huh?" The woman asked, teasing Serena. Serena laughed.
"Yeah. I was thinking cologne, but none really seem to shout Darien!" Serena replied.
"Hmm.. We have this collection over here..." The lady led Serena to a slightly
more expensive collection. Serena held the bottle marked 'roze' to her nose and
almost squealed in delight.
"This is perfect!" It was a light combination of roses and spice. "I'll take it!"
"All right." The salesclerk took a bottle and rang it up for Serena. "That'll be
$84.57."
Serena handed her the credit card Darien had given her and the lady glanced at it.
"Your related to Darien Shields?" She asked.
"Not really, but sorta.. It's a long story." Serena smiled. "I am living with him
though."
"I used to know him. A long while back... He was best friends with my boyfriend." The
lady told her.
"What's your name? I'll be sure to tell him hi for you." Serena smiled.
"I'm Rita. Tell him Andrew says hi too." Rita told her.
"I will, and thank you!" Serena took her bag. After she bought a card, she began
wandering the mall. She had forty minutes to kill, so she decided to browse. Serena
went into a shoe store and began looking at the Mary Jane's. She looked at the price,
then shrugged and tried them on. Serena stood up and she was four inches taller. She
almost burst out laughing at the outrageous height of the heel. She quickly took them
off and slipped on her white boot.
Serena left the shoe store and went to a smaller jewelry store. She noticed that a
group of three guys was following her. Serena tried to act casual as she looked
through some earrings. When she thought they weren't looking, she dashed out of the
store and into another one, a few stores down. She glanced out and saw that they had
noticed that she left, and were looking for her. As they walked past the store,
Serena heard snatches of their conversation.
"..find her.."
"Yo forget it man! She's gone."
Serena sighed with relief and turned to see what the store she had entered was. It
was a flower store. Serena's eyes fell on some perfect roses and she gasped.
"Oh they are wonderful!"
"Aren't they? The red rose is that of true love." The lady working there told Serena.
"They are so beautiful."
"Would you like one?" The lady aske, seperating a single red rose. She handed it
to Serena.
"How much is it?" Serena asked, accepting the rose.
"Nothing."
"Oh I couldn't!" Serena exclaimed.
"Please. The expression on your face was more than payment enough." The old woman
smiled.
"Thank you." Serena smiled happily as she sniffed the delicate blossom.
"Your welcome. Now, I think there is a young gentleman waiting for you." With that,
the old woman went into the back of the store, leaving a stunned Serena standing
there. She glanced at her watch and saw that the woman was right. She was going
to be late if she didn't get a move on.
Serena saw Darien standing at the doors a she raced towards them. He glanced at his
watch with a worried expression on his face. She was almost to him when she felt a
hand clamp on her arm and a familiar voice.
"Here you are..." One of the guys who had been following her sneered. Serena
screamed. The guy tried to clamp a hand over her mouth, but it was too late. Darien
had heard her. He raced towards her, and punched the guy who was holding her.
The boy released Serena's arm and she crumpled to the ground in tears. Darien
continued to punch the guy, whose friends had abandoned him, in the face. A security
guard had to pull Darien away. Immediately Darien fell to his knees and held Serena
tightly.
"Oh Serena! I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..." He whispered against her hair.
Darien helped a still shaken Serena to his car. She had calmed down considerably, but
was still shocked about what had happened.
Darien was furious with himself for allowing that to happen. She was still hurt and
and upset about the loss of her family. She didn't need the added pressure of mall
attacks.
"It's not your fault Darien." Serena told him, as though she was reading his mind.
"There was nothing you could have done."
Darien didn't reply. He just drove in silence and when he pulled up in front of the
house, stopped to let her out before driving the car around back. Serena could tell he
was really upset and she felt awful.
Serena went inside and up to her room. She had stashed some nice paper, ribbon and a
bow in her room. She wrapped his gift carefully, tying the pretty ribbon around the
bottle and toping it off with the bow. Serena quickly filled out the card, knowing
exactly what she wanted to say. Pleased with the final product, Serena set it down on
her dresser before going back downstairs.
Cautiously, Serena pushed the door to the kitchen open and peered inside. Jed was doing
something at the stove, but Darien was no where in sight. Serena pushed the door open
further and went in.
"Hello!" Jed greeted.
"Hi." Serena replied, with considerably less enthusiasm.
"What's wrong?" Jed asked, turning away from the stove. Serena saw that he was baking
Christmas cookies.
"It's Darien.." Serena sighed. "I got attacked in the mall and Darien is convinced that
it was his fault."
"Attacked?" Jed asked.
"Yeah, some guys grabbed my arm and tried to drag me away. Darien rescued me, and beat
the guy up, but he feels so guilty! I don't know what to do..." Serena sank into a
chair.
"Don't worry Serena. Darien knows that you don't think it's his fault. He'll get over
it." Jed smiled.
"How do you now that?" Serena asked.
"Oh... I know.." Jed replied, winking over Serena's head to Darien, who had been listening
from the side door of the kitchen.
