Kamui is the main character of X and he is the leader of the Dragon of Heaven. Originally, Kamui is an individual who his seen with two fates. He can become a DoH and protect humanity or become a DoE and destroy humanity so that the Earth can be rejuvinated. In the end, he decides to become a DoH so that he can protect a world that would let Kotori and Fuuma, his childhood friends, to be happy.
When we are first introduced to Kamui, it is after a 6 year absence from Tokyo. He and his mother, Tooru Magami left Tokyo shortly after Saya Monou died, the mother of Kotori and Fuuma. When he does return, he is a lot different from the cute and happy child that Kotori and Fuuma remember. In its place is a beautiful but angst driven teenager.
At first, he's a cold and rather arrogant person. He is indifferent to the decision he has to make and to the fate of the Earth, he is suspicious of everybody and is cold to Kotori and Fuuma. This, however, can be explained rather logically. He is suspicious of everyone because about two weeks before his arrival, Tooru is burned to death and really has no one else to trust. Also, he is cold to Kotori and Fuuma because he doesn't want the both of them to get hurt because of his predicament.
However, upon deciding to join the DoH, it is found out that Fuuma is Kamui's twin star and Fuuma takes Kamui's place for the DoE. One of the first thing that Fuuma does, now very different from the kind and caring childhood friend, is kill his sister and Kamui loses the ones he loves at the same time. It is so devastating that this event traumatizes him into a coma. With the help of Subaru, he snaps out of it and remains living so that he can bring Fuuma back. (According to Kakyou, the dream gazer of the DoE, he can only do this by using the Holy Sword.)
Approximately 3 months after this ordeal, Kamui becomes a nicer, sweeter and more caring person. (apparently, he's being drawn a lot better too. ^^) He now lives with Sorata, Arashi and Yuzuriha, which makes a lot of sense since all are from out of town and attends the CLAMP school. They live very much like a family and since then, Kamui has been on better terms with everybody, including Daisuke, whom Kamui fights and injures upon first meeting him. He's gotten a lot closer to his fellow DoH and has recently found a new friend named Keiichi who is a very genki (could compete with Yuzuriha) class rep. ^^ You can tell how much he's changed because even chibi Inuki seems to like him the best...other than Yuzuriha, of course. ^^
With many battles with Fuuma and the injury of Subaru, Kamui is more willing to fight and now wishes to bring back Fuuma but also to protect the ones he cares about. This is shown most vividly with his fight with Fuuma after finding Yuzuriha. However, Kamui is the only DoH who can not create a kekkai and wishes deeply that he can create a kekkai so that he can protect people.
Misc: Kamui's only known relatives are Tooru, his mother and Tokiko, his aunt. Both are deceased. Tooru was burned to death and Tokiko died because she is the sword bearer and dies shortly after the Holy Sword literally comes out of her body.
