Subaru is the 13th head of the Sumeragi Clan. He had a twin sister named Hokuto and has a past with Seishirou, a DoE. In X, he is one of the most powerful members in the group, probably second to Kamui. Subaru is one of several crossover characters from Tokyo Babylon and though, he may seem a little cold from the exterior, he still holds that kind heart that he had as a child. However, certain past events have changed him.
To better explain Subaru's situation, we first have to talk about Tokyo Babylon. This takes place when Subaru is quite young and he makes a bet with Seishirou by a sakura tree. Though, Subaru doesn't quite remember, Seishirou said that he would spend one year with Subaru and if he does not feel a thing then Seishirou will kill him. (Or something like that. It can also be noted here that the stars on Subaru's hands were given by Seishirou when they met that day.) So, a few years later, Seishirou meets Subaru again and he spends one year with Subaru. However, after one year, he declared that he did not feel a thing for Subaru even though Subaru fell in love with him. Seishirou then tries to kill him and the shock of this puts him into a catatonic state. It is only when Hokuto, pretending to be Subaru, is murdered by Seishirou does Subaru awaken from his state from the pain that his sister had endured. This pretty much ends Tokyo Babylon...pretty dang tragic, ne?
To show the connection Subaru has with Seishirou, Subaru had lost his eye during a fight with Fuuma. This injury is similar to that of Seishirou who had lost his eye while protecting Subaru. Apparently, this is a minor wish of Subaru and Fuuma had merely fulfilled it. Also, Subaru seems to have taken up smoking, a small habit of Seishirou's.
So, Subaru endures life without his love and twin sister by trying to make his wish come true. In X, Subaru becomes a Dragon of Heaven, though, not a lot of interaction between them and him exist...well, compared to the others. I believe that in the series, only Kamui and Yuzuriha have gotten Subaru to smile...sorta. It is to be noted that Subaru and Kamui seem to share a special bond due to their similar tragic past. This bond also exists because Subaru was able to get Kamui out of his catatonic state after Kotori died.
Up until now, it was thought that Subaru's wish was to kill Seishirou to avenge the death of his sister. However, it was shown that Subaru wanted Seishirou to kill him. Seishirou nearly succeeds at this but when Hokuto died, she had casted a spell on Seishirou so that in the case that Seishirou will kill Subaru like he did to Hokuto, the attack would backlash towards him. In the end, Seishirou is the one who died leaving a very devastated and sad Subaru. Though, Subaru managed to survive the ordeal, he has gone missing thus leaving the DoH and unable to make a kekkai. (This is b/c Seishirou was the reason for his kekkai.) However, one thing that is interesting is that the person who kills the Sakurazukamori becomes a Sakurazukamori in turn and I'm not sure whether Subaru is nowa Sakurazukamori.
