Minerals and gemstones have different properties which enables geologists to identify them through examination.

This can either be done visually (using the naked eye or a hand lens) or scientifically e.g. with acid tests.

The following properties can all be used for identification:-

	Colour
	Hardness
	Cleavage/Twinning
	Lustre
	Chemical Analysis
