Garnet is a silicate of iron and aluminium
and can be opaque or transparent. It derives it's red colour from
iron and can be used as an abrasive. It is reasonably hard (7-7.5
on the mohs scale) but can be chipped easily. Some red garnets contain
rutile (titanium oxide). These specimens are very valuable.
