Sapphire is heat resistant and very hard (9 on the mohs scale). It is a form of corundum and similar in composition to ruby (aka red corundum). Pure corundum is colourless but sapphire appears blue due to the presence of iron and titanium.

The finest deposits can be found in India, although stocks are now very low.
