Carrot Cake

Supplies Needed:

Model Magic or other suitable modeling compound
Cream fabric paint, acrylic paint, or caulking (add touch of regular yellow paint to white)
Fimo in the following colors - white, green, and orange
Nuts – Cork, Fimo (tan, translucent, green, and brown), or Apricot Seeds (found in soap making section of craft store)
Tacky Glue

2 work tiles (or other flat surface that can go in the oven. Even foil will do, although tiles are better)
Razor Blade (optional, but helpful)
Tweezers
Sandpaper or nail file for those using cork for nuts
Needle tool or long pin
Paint Brush

Roll Model Magic to desired thickness (My cake is about ¼" tall, yours can be taller or shorter, it is up to you!)

Punch out round with some type of cutter (I used a hairspray bottle cap). Mine is approximately ¾" in diameter.

Let Dry

For the carrots mix small amounts of orange with white and green with white.

I took the orange mixture and formed them on the tile with my two thumb nails making sure that one end was more narrow than the other.

I took the green mixture and applied it on the thicker end of the carrot with my needle tool. I made sure I poked it so looked "rough" like frosting.

I put horizontal lines on the orange part of the carrot.

My cakes have 8 carrots each about 4 mm or 3/16 long.

If you plan on using Fimo for nuts on the side of the cake, mix equal parts tan with translucent. Take half of that mixture and roll into the skinniest snakes that you can. Take a crumb of green and add it to the other half. Roll that into skinny snakes also. Take a tiny bit of brown clay and roll into skinny snakes also.

I baked everything as per package instructions (20 minutes at 265ºF).

Now, take the Model Magic round and paint with cream fabric paint, acrylic paint, or caulking. Remember, you can take white and add a little bit of yellow acrylic paint to it. Put aside and let dry.

If you are using cork for nuts, sand it with nail file or sand paper and collect shavings into a pile.

Take Fimo creations out of oven.

If you are making your nuts from Fimo, slice the canes into tiny bits. Use mostly tan and just a little bit of the brown.

When cake has dried, glue carrots on top and the nuts on the sides.
