Hobby Hangar Extra 300S
This is a sport scale model of an Extra 300S. It was built
from a Hobby Hangar © kit. It is an all wood model and all parts were laser cut. Building was quick and straight forward. I modified the kit by making the vertical fin and stabilizer from 1/8" balsa sheeting. I found that the built up fin and stabilizer were too weak as shown on the plan. I also sheeted the wing from the spar to the leading edge with 1/32" balsa sheeting for additional strength. Strip ailerons replaced the built up version for an improved scale look.
The model was covered with Econokote. It follows Patty Wagstaff's 1999 color scheme. I duplicated the checker scheme on the rudder by cutting 1/2" squares of Econokote and applying them onto a white background.
The cowl and landing gear were painted with Lustrecote to match. The red checker was duplicated by cutting 1/2" squares of Scotch Magic tape.
First I applied the tape to wax paper. Then I cut it into squares. The tape was then peeled off the wax paper and applied to the pre-painted white cowl.
The tape was peeled off after the red coat was dry to the touch. The paint adhered very well to the tape making it strong enough to be removed from the cowl without difficulty. I didn't let the red paint to cure overnight fearing that it would damage the white undercoat upon removal of the tape. Goldberg 1/16" gold stripping tape was used throughout the model.
