ACE R/C Simple Series Extra 230
This is a sport model made to resemble an Extra 230. It was built
from an Ace R/C,Inc. © kit. I believe the model is out of production but kits may still be found in flea markets and Internet.
I purchased my kit in a flea market for $10.00. Building was quick and straight forward.
As the name implies, it is very SIMPLE to build. No modifications were made and it was built as instructed on the plans.
The fuselage and tail were built from wood while the wings are all foam.
The wings were not sheeted with balsa. Instead a strip of 3/4" wide nylon filament strapping tape was applied for reinforcement.
Unfortunately the foam wings get damaged very easily. The entire model including trim was covered with Econokote.
I initially installed a P.A.W. .060 diesel engine.
I couldn't get the engine to give me the power I was looking for. I believe it was my inexperience with diesel engines,
not the engine itself. I became impatient and decided to install the O.S. .10 FP instead.
The model penetrates the wind very well. Landings are a bit tricky since the wing loading is on the high side. As long as I keep the airspeed up on final, landings are usually fine.
Since the airfoil is semi-symmetrical, knife edge is a little bit tricky. Hammer heads, snap rolls, split s, avalanches, spins, rolling circles... are all within
its capabilities.
