CHAPTER ONE  ANOTHER JOURNEY FROM PLATFORM  NINE AND THREE QUARTERS
"Oye, Harry, hurry up!  We don't want to miss the Hogwarts Express!" called  George Weasley.  "I'm coming; just a sec!"  yelled back fifteen-year-old  Harry Potter.  He turned to the tall, dark-haired man standing next to him.   "Bye Sirius," he told Sirius Black as he hugged him briefly.  "I'll miss  you."  "Run along Harry; you don't want to miss your train," Sirius answered.   "Bye!" Harry called one last time as he jumped into the train compartment,  which he, the Weasley twins, Ginny Weasley, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger  had to themselves.    " 'Bout time, Harry," joked Ron.  "We were afraid the train was gonna leave  without ya."  Harry sat down next to Hermione and across from Ron.  He heard  a contented purring sound and glanced over at Crookshanks, who was looking  quite smug, sitting on Hermione's lap.  Just then, Harry thought of  something.  "Have any of you guys seen Hedwig, by chance?" he asked Ron and  Hermione.    At this, Crookshanks purred even more loudly.  He glanced over at  Crookshanks, and watched Hermione coo him, saying, "Aww, isn't he so  adorable, he just wants more attention." He then noticed something.   "Hermione," he asked, "did you get a haircut recently?"  Her cheeks tinged a  slight pink and was about to answer when Ron said, "I'll bet that stupid cat  did it!  I'll bet he ate poor Hedwig."    Hermione's cheeks became even more flushed, and she replied, "He did not!  He  didn't do anything of the sort.  He wouldn't eat Hedwig!"  At this,  Crookshanks suddenly let out a hiss, and then resumed purring contentedly and  looking very smug.  "He did, he did!" Ron shouted quite loudly.  "Shhh, you  don't want to get us in trouble before we even get to school, do you, Ron?   You know, we're perfects this year, and Harry's the Quidditch Captain, and  you're on the team, too, Ron.  We should be setting good examples, not  shouting so loud that people in other compartments might hear it!"  Scolded  Hermione.    "By the way," Harry inquired, "where did Ginny, Fred, and George go to?"   Hermione, quite happy to change the subject, answered, "Well . . . George and  Fred went a couple compartments ahead of ours, to find their friend, Lee  Jordan, and Ginny went back a couple compartments to hang out with her  boyfriend, Colin Creevey.  Why do you ask, anyway?"  "Just curious," Harry  responded.    "Oh, and you never answered my question earlier: did you get a haircut  recently?" asked Harry.  Her cheeks resumed their pink tinge and she was  nodding "yes" as suddenly, one of the windows flew open and in flew Hedwig.    "There you are!" exclaimed Harry as Hedwig flew to him, dropped a letter in  front of him, and began nibbling affectionately on his ear.  Harry picked up  the letter she had delivered for him.    It was on the same yellowish parchment and in the same green ink as the  letter he received every year telling him what supplies he needed for yet  another year at Hogwarts.  He opened it carefully, so as not to rip it.  He  pulled out the letter.  First he read it silently, to himself.  "Well, what  does it say, Harry?  Are you gonna read it aloud to us or what?"  Ron and  Hermione questioned him.   "Yes.  I'll read it aloud to you."  Dear Harry, How are you?  Doing well, I hope.   I am just writing to inform you that  you might see a bit of Moony this  year.    Actually, since Dumbledore  hired me as the Defense Against the  Dark Arts teacher again, you will  probably see more than a bit of Moony.  I hope that your friends Hermione  and Ron are also faring well.      Sincerely,  Moony (Professor Remus Lupin)      "Professor Lupin's back!?!"  cried Hermione.  "This is terrific!  He was  always my favorite Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher."  "Mine, too,"   said Ron.  "He actually knew what he was doing."    Just then, Ginny ran back into their compartment with Colin.  "All right,  Harry?" Colin asked as he did so often, and as usual, Harry responded,  "Hello, Colin."  "Hi Ron, hi Hermione . . . . hello . . Harry,"  said Ginny.   Ron whispered in Harry's ear, with a hint of amusement, "I still think she's  rather fond of you, Harry!"  Ron sniggered, and Ginny's face went beat red.   "Shut up, Ron!" Harry whispered back.    "Anyway, Ron, I came in here to tell you that we're almost to Hogwarts, and  that you should probably pack up whatever you've out and to put your robes  on,"  Ginny rambled.  "Oh, and Neville wanted me to check with everyone to  see if anyone's seen his toad.  Have any of you?"  "No, we haven't seen his  toad, but if we do, we'll bring it to him right away," responded Hermione.   "Ginny, when you pass through their compartment, could you tell Fred and  George to come retrieve their trunks, please?" asked Ron.  "Sure thing," she  responded and left with Colin.  A few minutes later, the train came to a screeching halt and when they looked  out the window, the three friends could see their home for the next few  months: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
