Occupation/Rank: Weyrling/HAD

Physical Description

K'oli has a hard, determined look to his face. Though he is young, his face bears the evidence of having to keep a huge secret to himself. He is small for his age and wiry with it. His skin is darkly tanned and his arms and legs are usually covered with scratches and scrapes. These constant scratches and scrapes are badges of his disregard for pain and general lack of concern for his own safety. His smile is always somewhat crooked and strained, and when he smiles, he reveals his chipped front tooth which may be cute on someone much younger than him but is not all that attractive in his own face. His nose is more than a little aquiline and stands out obviously from his face. K'oli has dark hair that is long and messy. The thick black strands constantly swing in front of his face though he is more likely to simply shove them out of the way instead of simply cutting his hair. At the most he will pull his bangs back away from his face and work like that if need be. His eyes are a dark brown in color and they often dart back and forth as if he is constantly hearing voices…

Personality

K'oli is loud-mouthed, but unlike his friend Nashat, it is truly only a cover. K'oli, as someone who can hear all dragons, suffers from catching conversations of riders that happen to travel over the cothold. In his mind, he believes that if he constantly makes noise with his mouth, he will be able to block out some of the noise that runs through his head. Since it is a gift he has had all his life, he has managed to learn how to sometimes ignore the little voices that sometimes comes to his mind. But when dragons are near, the louder and more aggressive he sounds. K'oli is truly all bark and no bite. He is not afraid to fight by the side of his friends but he will not go out and start a fight unless there is a good cause for which to do so. A secretive type of person, K'oli keeps his ability to himself. It is something that only his mother and he know about and he wishes to keep it this way. When dragons notice him, he often convinces them to keep his skill a secret since he has no wish to interfere with their lives or those of their riders. His biggest fear is becoming a political tool. It was a fear originally felt by his mother and it managed to pass along to him. Since he was a small child, his wish was to become a dragonrider and break out of the fad of being a drudge, something that his family never seemed to rise beyond. Now that he is older, he has a different reason for wanting to be a dragonrider. He believes that maybe if he has a dragon and a voice to call his own the other dragons will be more apt to leave him alone. Not only that, but Nashat has been a leader to him for most of his life. Without her, he feels that he would be greatly lost.

Background History

The first time Kioli came to his mother to tell her that he had talked to a dragon, she did not believe him. He was only a toddler at the time, after all, and toddlers were keen on making up stories to attract attention from others. However, as Kioli grew older, it became harder and harder for Delanan to deny what her son was telling her. She tried to convince herself and Kioli that he was hearing voices simply because he was lonely and needed friends. For a while, Delanan blamed it on herself. She never knew Kioli's father, he had been random roll in the hay for her, and she thought that maybe Kioli was subconsciously trying to make up for the lack of a father figure. For a long while, Delanan feared that her son was simply crazy. This fear affected Kioli who became afraid to tell his mother that dragons liked to try and talk to him when they visited the cothold or questioned him about his skill in passing. Like any cotholder brat, or any brat for that matter, Kioli knew that crazy people were sent away to be watched by Healers or ended up killing himself.

One particular night had a big affect on him. A green passing through the area was very firm in her resolve to talk to him and it took a lot of convincing on Kioli's part to keep the dragon from telling her rider. Still very young, only around seven turns at the time, Kioli tried to run away, tired of dragons trying to speak with him. He believed that maybe things would get better if he could find a place with no dragons at all. His plan didn't work well. He was far too young to survive on his own and he was far too scared. Kioli made it halfway through the cothold before he got scared of the dark and came running home to a worried mother. Desperate to make her believe him and prove that he was not crazy, he related to her all the things he had learned from the dragons and every small comment that they had made to him.

Feeling sorry that she had made her son think he was crazy, Delanan began to believe his stories, especially after he son seemed to have a high understanding of things that only those adults in the cothold seemed to understand. These understandings were based on things dragons had told them about was going on outside the little cothold. She apologized for making him feel that he was crazy and did all that she could to relieve him of this fear. Kioli was more than thankful to know that he was not crazy and that his mother finally believed him. That was when she told him to be careful of people in power because they might want to use him to spy on dragonriders or even work against dragonriders. That was the last thing Kioli wanted. Though he found the urge of dragons to talk to him troublesome he didn't want someone to try and use him to spy on their riders. He liked dragonriders and had a great deal of respect for them. He agreed to keep his skill a secret from his friends and anyone else who might notice it.

Nashat played a key role in Kioli's life. His day was often interrupted by the conversations of dragons that traveled near the cothold and felt the need to question him or greet him in passing. Kioli often lacked direction because he was constantly being interrupted by more than one source. Nashat, as the powerful tyrant sort, gave him the direction he needed while also being a loyal friend to him. It was actually from her that he learned how to somewhat control what he was hearing. He learned that if he was loud like her and aggressive, he'd be too distracted to hear what dragons were trying to say. It wasn’t an infallible system, but for the most part it worked. Kioli was never a violent young man, but necessity called for him to become so.

Kioli, like Nashat, was often feared by his peers. He was blindly loyal to Nashat and if anyone bad-mouthed her, they would find a very angry Kioli confronting them. It was soon learned by the other boys to avoid making fun of Kioli for his size. True he was small, but he could hold his own unless shear numbers forced him down. During his time as a rather bully-like brat, he learned to disregard physical pain. He has suffered more than one broken finger and has broken his prominent nose on many an occasion. However he learned to take his injuries in stride and keep going. Delanan was constantly patching him and Nashat up, usually during a lecture about how she was greatly annoyed by their reckless behavior.

He was very proud to have been found acceptable for Search by the Mirror Lake Weyr though he fears his secret will be told. Though Mirror Lake Weyr seems to be an open place where everyone is treated equal, Kioli knows enough of this world to know that people can easily be seduced by the promise of power. He worries that even though people at Mirror Lake Weyr are generally good people that someday the wrong person in the weyr will find out his abilities and use them against the people he has gotten to know and like. For this reason, he keeps his secret even from Nashat, who he trusts above all others.

Dragon Info

Name: Kossith

Color: Blue

Age: Hatchling (4.20.1286)

Description

Kossith is a very large blue, exceeding the normal size range for his color. The most notable thing about his body would have to be his wingspan. His wingspan, like his general body size, is larger than average. As a dragonet, his wings were awkward but as an adult he soars gracefully and is very powerful in flights against Thread. He can usually keep up with his brown brothers. Though he is larger than average, he is somewhat slender with it. In fact, Kossith is big and feminine looking. His head is angular and delicate in appearance. Like all dragons, he is somewhat awkward on the ground, but his limbs are lean and limber. His hide is a deep, midnight blue that looks like crushed velvet. His hide is soft to the touch, but no more so than your average dragon. The deep blue color is what gives him the velvety look and not really his hide. Under Kossith's chin his hide is a pale blue streak that widens across his throat and turns into a brilliant blaze down his chest. The blaze tapers off and disappears just as it starts to reach the end of his chest cavity. The blaze is several shades lighter than the rest of his hide and when he is in the air, it makes an easy mark for people to use when telling him apart from other dragons.

Kossith is a very childlike dragon, even when he matures, he has a playful quality about him that is more reminiscent of a weyrling than an adult dragon capable of fighting Thread and mating. He is curious and fills K'oli's head constantly with questions and comments. Though he understands the special quality about K'oli that makes other dragons want to speak with him, Kossith is possessive of his rider's attention. Kossith will allow other dragons to speak with his rider but does not like it when they do so for great lengths of time. Though he is generally amiable and friendly, Kossith will demand that other dragons leave his rider be if he feels they are taking too much attention off of himself. Kossith, as said before, loves to play with other dragons and other creatures in general. Unless the creature is seen as a food item, it will be considered a possible friend and playmate. Thus, Kossith enjoys the company of firelizards and canines, though most canines tend to be wary of him. A very unique thing about Kossith is that he would almost be considered bisexual in human terms. This does not go to say that he would attempt a mating with a male dragon, but he does enjoy cuddling with bronzes, browns, and other blues as much as he enjoys cuddling up to a green, or would enjoy cuddling up to a gold. A very physical dragon, he likes to be in contact with his rider and if not his rider, other dragons. It seems to reassure him and make him feel more comfortable. He has a rather short memory span and forgets many little details of what K'oli tells him; therefore he is not always sure of himself and what he is doing. To other riders and dragons, Kossith is a large, fairly feminine blue that is friendly and physical (to the point of being annoying).
