Physical Description

A few grey streaks have begun to show in Nalia's shoulder length golden-brown hair, but even in middle age the weyrwoman remains a stately beauty. Always quick with a smile, the skin around her clear gray eyes sports a few laugh lines, although they only seem to add to her charm. Nalia's skin is softly tanned from all the time she spends outdoors, with a very light scattering of freckles on the bridge of her nose, and she possesses a healthy, athletic physique. Standing at 5'6", she carries herself with a certain warm dignity befitting someone of her position.

Nalia often prefers to wear clothes that, although well-tailored and of high quality, are capable of holding up to a bit of wear and tear. She likes to be comfortable, and she likes to keep busy, so fancy dresses just aren't going to cut it most of the time.

Personality

Nalia is a very caring, friendly person. Most of the time she is very laid-back and easy to get along with, and favors everyone she meets with an infectious smile. Never having been able to have any children of her own, she can be a little mothering with the weyrlings and younger riders, but never in an overbearing way.

She takes her job as senior weyrwoman quite seriously, and when dealing with duties that require a level-head she is always the consummate professional. However, she can at times be prone to moodiness, although her ability to stay relaxed in times of stress has improved greatly over the years. Being the caring, intuitive person that she is, her emotions are usually close to the surface, which can cause her to be easily hurt. She is very in tune with the feelings of those she cares for, and can become worried and distressed whenever one of those people is upset or not feeling well. Likewise, she can also be very protective over those individuals, and has been known to let her temper loose on people who dare to threaten those she loves.

Nalia is extremely intolerant of discrimination. Bigotry of any kind is one of the quickest ways to ignite her temper, and she has on more than one occasion unleashed the full force of her anger upon an unsuspecting rider who was foolish enough to let slip a sexist or homophobic comment within hearing range.

Background History

Nalia was born and grew up in Fort weyr as the middle child of a healer and a bluerider. She had a fairly normal childhood, with parents and two brothers who loved her and whom she adored in return. But as Nalia grew older, she began to get frustrated with her limitations. Her parents had typical holder beliefs about the roles of men and women and did not like to allow their daughter to participate in activities they thought of as unsuitable for girls. Her brothers received much more independence than she did, and when her older brother impressed a bronze, suddenly Nalia fell into the background. A few years later, her younger brother impressed a green, but was never given the same recognition and respect that her older brother received, not only within the weyr but within her own family. Nalia saw how certain people received the bulk of the special treatment and couldn't help but feel angered by it.

The following year Nalia was picked as a candidate for the gold egg and impressed Liyanth. Everyone was surprised, including her. After that her family's position within the weyr became significantly elevated, but she still felt dissatisfied with her life. There were at the time 3 other weyrwomen at Fort, and aside from caring for Liyanth and learning all the required knowledge for her position, she really didn't have many responsibilities. Nalia had always thought that becoming a weyrwoman would give her the ability to really make a difference in people's lives, but this did not turn out to be the case. Furthermore, she was beginning to feel like a trapped animal, stuck in the same place she had always lived in and completely unable to do anything about it. When Liyanth achieved adulthood and began to near the time of her first mating flight, many of the bronzeriders treated her as if she and Liyanth were no more than glorified breeding stock. Needless to say, that first flight was a very unpleasant experience.

After the subsequent hatching, Nalia began slipping away as often as she could get away with to explore remote places on Pern. This was how she discovered an abandoned weyr on the East coast. After finding it, she couldn't get the idea of starting a new weyr out of her head, but she figured it was an impossible dream and tried not to think about it. Right around this time, T'zair entered her life. She had known him casually since impression, as she did all the bronzeriders, but had not until then really given herself the chance to get to know him. The two of them fell in love quickly and deeply, and it was eventually he who convinced her that starting a new weyr was not an impossibility. The two of them managed to convince a handful of other dissatisfied riders to join them, and then they all left Fort to start a new life for themselves. It was by no means an easy job, but 25 years later, Mirror Lake is a fully functional and recognized weyr.

Unfortunately, in spite of her success as a weyrwoman, Nalia was never able to have the one thing she wanted most: a family of her own. Two years after coming to Mirror Lake, she became pregnant with T'zair's child, but the baby died during an extremely difficult birth that left Nalia unable to have other children. This remains an extremely painful memory for her.

Description

Liyanth is a large, healthy gold with a deep, solid toned hide. The brightness of her color may have faded a bit over the years, but she'll never lose the youthful gleam in her eyes.

Gregarious and possessed of a somewhat playful (albeit less exuberantly so these days) nature, she is well liked among the riders and other dragons. Like her rider, she tends to be very sensitive to the emotions of people around her, and can become quite concerned when conflicts arise.

Having gotten quite used to being senior queen, she does enjoy a bit of well-deserved pampering, and particularly loves to bathe in the lake before spending hours basking in the sun.

Description

Whisper is a smallish brown with a very dark chocolate hide. He is very quiet and reserved for a firelizard, and does not readily trust strangers. Generally he prefers to stay near to Nalia, resting quietly on her shoulder with his tail draped around her neck, but he also adores Liyanth and T'zair's green firelizard, Dart.
