Physical Description

Standing 6'2", Orrin possesses the fit, lanky physique of a runner. His skin is naturally tan, and his hair is a very dark shade of brown. It is quite thick and has a bit of a natural wave to it, and he usually keeps it cut short for the sake of ease and manageability. Surrounded by thick, feminine lashes, his bright blue eyes create a noticeably striking effect against his dark skin and hair, and they have an extremely emotive quality to them that many people find quite charming. The product of mixed lineage, most of Orrin's features come from his traveler (gypsy) mother, but he got his eyes from his northern father.

Orrin is attractive in a comfortable, boy-next-door sort of way. He possesses a very casual air, and unless attending an important event, dresses in minimal clothing that is comfortable and durable. He loves to go barefoot, and will do so whenever he can get away with it. A very agile person, Orrin moves with a kind of graceful ease, and he is usually quick with an honest and charming smile.

Personality

Orrin is an extremely easy person to like. He's honest, friendly, open (usually) and warm, but also quite a deep, sensitive soul once you get to know him. Throughout his life Orrin has been a very creative, artistic person, and his natural talent and affinity for music and storytelling was what led him to take up the harpercraft.

In addition to his mother's physical attributes, he seems to have inherited her wanderlust. One thing he can't stand is feeling restricted or tied down, and he loves to wander the lands of Pern (which he does in spite of the dangers of threadfall), meeting people and exploring new climates and cultures. He's picked up many obscure songs and folktales over the years from his travels. He's also a very earthy person, and loves to be outdoors breathing fresh air whenever possible. He likes to run and swim, and spends a great deal of time out on the beach, even in winter.

A born romantic, Orrin's tendency to experience the world through his emotions can be both a gift and a curse. When he's happy, the world is full of beauty and sunshine, but when he's hurt (and he's hurt rather easily), he can fall into severe melancholy. He wears his heart on his sleeve, for better or worse. When in love he is incredibly charming, sweet and expressive; often writing poems and songs for the object of his affection. However, his open sensitivity can (and has) made him an easy target for the wrong sorts of women, and he inevitably ends up hurt and alone. These repeated incidents have had the affect of making him quite wary and distrustful of anything beyond casual flirtations.

Background History

Orrin was born in a small cothold in upper Igen, but that is not where he spent his childhood. His mother was part of a family of travelers, and when she met Orrin's father, a smith of Northern blood who'd been living in Keroon, he initially lived and traveled with her and her family. However, shortly after Orrin was born, the two of them decided to settle down, so his mother left her family and went to live with her husband in Keroon Hold. This is where Orrin spent the first thirteen years of his life. His mother was never able to bear children again, as Orrin's birth had been a difficult one, so he grew up an only child.

The three of them lived comfortably and happily together for a time. Orrin was always very close to his mother, and she taught him many of the stories and songs that had been passed on through her family line. Still, as the years went by, it became clear that his mother was not happy living in a Hold. She remained with her family because she loved them and couldn't bear the thought of leaving, but she was often listless and depressed. She lost a great deal of weight and developed a fragile constitution. His father tried to make life more enjoyable for her, but would not let them take up a roaming lifestyle due to his obligations at the hold and his concern over his son's safety (threadfall had begun shortly after Orrin's birth) and education. When Orrin was 13, his mother became extremely sick, and despite the efforts of the healers, eventually died because of it.

This was when Orrin's relationship with his father began to deteriorate. Both of them were hit very hard by the loss of his mother. His father pulled inward emotionally, and become distant and cold with his son, and Orrin secretly blamed his father for his mother's death (something he never quite forgave until his father's own death years later). His father was hard on him at times, and tried to steer Orrin into the smithcraft and away from music, but Orrin refused to be the person his father wanted him to be, and a year later he left home with his mother's violin, his father's runnerbeast and a letter of recommendation from Keroon's Masterharper (who had been a good friend of his mother's and saw a great deal of promise in Orrin's musical talents).

Eventually Orrin arrived at the Harper Hall in Fort, and, after showing them his letter and playing a few songs for them, they (luckily) decided to take a chance and allow him to study the harpercraft. Life improved for Orrin at the crafthall. He got along well with most of the people there and made a number of friends. He also impressed everyone with his hard work and natural talent (particularly with the violin, which his mother had been informally teaching him to play for years), and was able to rise quickly through the ranks. As a journeyman he left the hall to travel the continent. Many at the crafthall were concerned for his safety and urged him not to go through with his plans, but Orrin was very careful about making sure he always knew when and where thread was scheduled to fall, and although he had a few near-misses, was never caught in a fall without shelter. For the most part this was one of the best parts of Orrin's life, and he still looks back on that time as a fond memory.

When Orrin was 22, he met and fell in love with Cori, another harper ten years his senior at Ista Hold. With her, he felt happier than he'd ever been, and thought he could spend the rest of his life with her. However, to her he was more of a fling, and at the height of their relationship she left him to marry another man whom she'd had an on-again-off-again relationship with for many years. Orrin was extremely hurt by this, and this time when he left to renew his travels he requested the help of a greenrider he'd gotten to know at Ista Weyr (where he'd spent a stint as a Weyr Harper before meeting Cori) and transferred to High Reaches Hold. This is where he spent the next two years of his life, until the illness of his estranged father brought him back to Keroon. His father died shortly after, but the two of them were able to reconcile in the brief time they had together.

A year later, deciding it was time for a change, Orrin asked to be flown to Lyra Cove, where he accepted the position as Hold Harper. He took to the location nicely, as he'd always loved living by the ocean, and so far has enjoyed life there. It has yet to be seen, however, if this is the place he might finally call home.
