Name: Vaala
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Birthday: 12.6.1266
Birthplace: Fort Hold
Location: Mirror Lake Weyr
Occupation/Rank: Weyrling/Sr. Apprentice Healer

Physical Description

Vaala posesses an almost ethereal beauty. She stands 5'7", with a thin, graceful (almost fragile) build. Her skin is naturally copper toned, and sleek dark-chocolate hair falls to the middle of her back. Vaala's eyes are large and exotic, with near-black irises that seem to express a constant sadness and depth of feeling. Moving with an unconscious sort of elegance, she is usually very quiet and unobtrusive in her mannerisms. Her preferred attire is often earthy tones. Nothing too bold or flashy, and she likes soft, draping fabrics.

Personality

Vaala could never be described as a cheerful person. Past tragedies, combined with her naturally reserved demeanor, have had the effect of lending her a melancholic sort of disposition. That said, she's never melodramatic or intentionally dreary. Rather, she simply keeps very much to herself and only rarely expresses joy. She does laugh, just not very often.

Vaala is a very quiet, gentle, thoughtful person. She does not like to be the center of attention, and tends to act very reserved and aloof when around large groups of people. She is rather sensitive, and can be hurt easily, but she tries her best not to show it. Generally a bit of a loner, she does not seem very willing to trust people with the inner workings of her mind and heart, and can often be seen curled up by a window, either reading or gazing thoughtfully at the moon.

Vaala has a beautiful voice, and listening to her sing is one of the only times she can be heard expressing strong emotions.

Background History

Vaala was born and grew up in Fort hold, as the eldest of three children. Her parents were wealthy breeders of runner beasts, and she lived a reasonably uneventful life throughout her childhood. When she was sixteen, her parents arranged a marriage for her with the son of another wealthy family within the Hold. She was extremely unhappy at the prospect of spending the rest of her life with someone she had not chosen to be with, but in the end was not given any real choice in the matter.

A few months after the engagement was announced, the man came by to see her while Vaala was alone in the house. He ended up raping her, and when her parents found out, they were understandably furious. Before they could confront the man and his family, however, he showed up at their door (apparently unaware that he had been found out), and a ferocious altercation ensued. Vaala fled the house, unable to stand being near her attacker or listen to him fight with her parents. While she was gone, the fight escalated and somehow the house caught fire, killing everyone inside.

Afterwards, Vaala had been offered a temporary home with a few kind families, but she could not stand the way everyone in Fort treated her like some poor, pitiable creature, so she left to join the healercraft. Two years later, a searchrider from Mirror Lake visited her crafthall and picked her as a candidate. Vaala was hesitant at first, not sure if Weyr life would appeal to her or if she would be able to handle the responsibilities of being a dragonrider, but eventually she chose to go, thinking that perhaps she could do a lot of good there as a healer. Once at the Weyr, she found that certain aspects of her new environment were pleasing to her (mostly the fact that women were treated as equals to men), but others seemed a bit disturbing (the open and permissive sexual atmosphere). As the time of hatching drew nearer, Vaala began to fear what might happen if she impressed, particularly if she impressed the gold. When the day of impression came, however, the gold went to a different girl, and Vaala instead impressed a blue who had been badly injured. Somehow, in that moment, all of her fears were washed away, replaced by an intense need to care for the little dragonet and show him all of the love and affection that she had refused to allow herself to feel since the death of her family.

After the hatching, the dragonhealers informed Vaala that Minarth would never be able to fly. Rather than allow herself to become dissapointed, however (as this meant she would never be a real dragonrider), she threw herself into healing work during her spare time, making certain that everyone understood that just because she could not fight thread in the air, did not mean she would not make herself equally as valuable a member of the Weyr.

Dragon Info

Name: Minarth
Color: Blue
Age: Hatchling (4.20.1286)

Description

Minarth, much like his rider, is lovely and dark. His ride is a rich, shimmering shade of midnight blue: an even, dark shade that spreads across his body. The only portion of him that shines a different tone is a large, mangled-looking pale blue scar along his left wing. This was given to him at his hatching, when the gold dragonet mistakenly clawed the much smaller blue. Aside from this noticable mar to his dainty perfection, Minarth is quite an attractive and nicely proportioned specimen of dragonkind, complete with larger-than-average, multifacted eyes.

A very mild-mannered dragon, Minarth rarely causes anyone any trouble. In fact, he usually seems quite content to sit back and let other dragons take the limelight. Sweet-natured and gentle, he is a favorite among children, whose ministrations he tolerates graciously, even when most other dragons would become irritated and move away. Like his rider, he is prone to long silences and deep thoughts, and his highly developed sense of intuition is already proving an eery amount of accuracy. People whisper that he would make a great search-dragon, if only his wing had not been damaged. Sadly, due to his injury, the dragonhealers have pronounced him permanently grounded. This is a touchy subject for Minarth, but nonetheless he seems to have accepted his lot in life with quiet grace.
